Bob: I AM referring to the 1861 Atlas maps that were published and Indexed by the Knox County society. but I fail to see the difference as an atlas is a bound collection of maps. Is your collection something special? Just need clarification. Ruth, As I recall, the 1861 Thompson map was not an atlas but a wall map, in it's original form. The Knox County Genealogical Society made it into an atlas. The one on the web-site looks suspiciously similar to the work that was created from the Thompson map, copyrighted and sold by the Knox County Genealogical Society. The page headings, typing of the identifying numbers and the line around the city limits of Galesburg all look so similar. Do you know of this 1861 map being made into an atlas by any person or organization other than the Knox County Genealogical Society? Hopefully the source of the one on the web-site will be revealed and the similarities will be explained and there wasn't any copying of the Society's work. Just curious to hear your thoughts. Hi again, Ruth - Thanks for your question below. In response, I think that just the act of placing the 1861 maps and related list of landowners (or, for that matter, any information) on the Internet makes them unique from paper publications. Once they are on the Internet, they become an index or a reference immediately available at will to everyone - regardless of where they live. That supports and enhances collaboration like we see every day on the Knox email list. It also allows people to use search engines like the ones on the Knox USGenWeb site to comb through reams of information in a matter of minutes for leads worth further pursuit. But the 1861 maps specifically might now be irrelevant. If Rex Cherrington is correct that the maps I displayed on the Knox County USGenWeb site were scans of work done by the Knox County Genealogical Society, then they will not be on the site without written KCGS approval. They have been removed pending a final determination. Both the USGenWeb Project and I strive to comply fully with the spirit and the letter of copyright law. On the broader issue though <grin>, perhaps KCGS should allow the Knox USGenWeb site to publish indexes to ALL of its paper publications. That would allow visitors to quickly find the KCGS publications that contain references to the lines they are researching. They might then purchase those specific publications. Right now the only real options that people have with KCGS publications are to 1) go to the Galesburg Public Library and spend hours manually searching through all of them [then they photocopy the pages they want], or 2) find some helpful sole on the Knox email list like yourself who will tell them about a reference. Most people interested in Knox County genealogy can't get to the Galesburg Public Library, so they default to option 2, or, more likely, they never learn about the reference at all. I think KCGS could sell a lot more publications if good indexes to their contents were available online. And, I bet there are plenty of volunteers on the Knox email list who would help get them online! The ultimate goal is better resources for everyone interested in Knox County genealogy.
