Going through my grandmother's things I found a clipping headed Obituary. It praises the life of Geo. W.Enke. There are no dates or names anywhere in it. The only clues I have are "At the time of his demise he occupied the position of Justice of the Peace in our city, the duties of which he filled with credit. For a long term of years he served as sheriff of Knox County, Ills.... He leaves to mourn his sudden departure, a wife, one son and two grand-daughters, who were depenent upon him for support..." To paraphase: on Friday he was fine, on Saturday he took sick, on Sunday he died, and on Monday they buried him. From other sources I have him married to Silvia Upson, b 1827. I think he was a brother of my great-grandmother, Rozina Enke Elwell; and they both may be the children of John and Ann Enke, Knox County IL On the back of the clipping was an article on a "Circus Wrecked. Five men instantly killed and others badly injured. On the 4th inst. John Robinson's circus train was wrecked at Ames, near Fergus Falls, (?)nn." The dead and injured were from all over the United States. "A decrease in illiteracy in the state during (?) past five years....This year it is reduced....one half what it was 1880, and it was then lower than any other (?) in the Union." "Julia Ward Howe called the Woman"s Congress to order in Des Moines on the 7th. She then introduced Mrs. H. L. T. Wolcott, of Mass., to read a paper..." I would greatly appreciate any help with more information on the Enkes and Elwells. Carol in Kansas
