Exie worked the family farm (80+ acres) while he watched. They had no children of their own but adopted Betty in 1924-1926. He died when she was in a mental hospital in Galesburg, Illinois for many years and ended up in a nursing home. Gram says she was institutionalized for 40+ years and remembers her in the 70's still in the hospital. Ben never made the trips back to visit. Only Exie and their daughter (adopted) would make the trip back on the train.
