Is there a contact to obtain information from vital records of Knox County? I am trying to learn what became of an ancestor, Zadoc White STEVENS, who is found on the 1860 and 1870 censuses of Knoxville, Knox County, Illinois, but whose wife, Ann Stevens, was listed as a "widow" on the 1880 Knoxville census. No record has been found of Zadoc's death or burial in Knoxville, Illinois. Zadoc's parents and two of his children are buried in the Knoxville cemetery, but Zadoc and Ann are not there. Neither Ann Stevens nor children of Zadoc and Ann are found on any census after 1880. If Zadoc and/or Ann Stevens had died in Knox County it has been suggested that possibly there would be a will or a probate file in the Knox County office of Vital Records. Statewide records apparently are available only from 1916 and later. Might there be county records for earlier years? David Young, Harrisburg, PA
Circuit Clerk would have probate. That is assuming there was an estate worth probating. In addition to estate records, one should also search for land and property records and court records. It may be that there was no probate, but other records might have been created. County Recorder would have vitals. Vitals were recorded as early as 1877 at the county level, but not every event got recorded. You might try to Google Illinois Statewide Marriage Index, it goes back before 1900. jb ----- Original Message ----- From: "d.young" <dmyeby@paonline.com> To: <ILKNOX-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, February 07, 2007 7:33 PM Subject: [ILKNOX] Knox County vital records > Is there a contact to obtain information from vital records of Knox County? > > I am trying to learn what became of an ancestor, Zadoc White STEVENS, > who is found on the 1860 and 1870 censuses of Knoxville, Knox County, > Illinois, but whose wife, Ann Stevens, was listed as a "widow" on the > 1880 Knoxville census. Knox County Courthouse 200 S. Cherry Street Galesburg, IL 61401 info@knoxclerk.org email Request Pay for Vital Records Telephone: County Clerk Circuit Clerk Recorder (309) 345-3815 (309) 345-3859 (309) 345-3818 The above you can get a hold of the clerks at the Knox Co Courthouse and ask about a will on him. I have a full listing around here some place just haven t gotten it all online yet. Also, they could be buried in the Knoxville cemetery and just have a tombstone. The Knoxville Cemetery records were lost How they got them back was going out and reading the tombstones that were in the cemetery thirty years ago last summer. I've helped with some of them on updates and adding more people who I've found through research and people like you looking for someone who should be there but can't find them. Plus, a few mistakes as we are all human and make them. It's the only way they had of finding out or getting some idea of who was buried in the cemetery. They didn't have register the deaths, births, or even a marriage until the year of 1916 but in the year of 1877 some of them did not all because some of my family didn't see fit to register theirs either and then I find it harder to track them down. There is also a Sylvester Stevens buried in the Knoxville Cemetery born in Danbury, Conn born Sept 12, 1804 d. june 15, 1878.
