Hannah [maiden name is unknown ] Buffington the, apparent mother of John A. Buffington, was born 23 March 1785 in either: a. Hanover, Greenbriar (sic) County, Virginia [this is on her tombstone]; or b. Pennsylvania [this information is from the federal census reports of 1860, 1870 and 1880] Orange Twp, Knox County, IL. 2. The given name of Hannah Buffington's spouse is not known. The date of birth and place of birth of her spouse is not known. The site of Hannah's marriage is not known. 3. It appears that Hannah and her spouse had at least two children: a. Mary Jane Buffington [First marriage to Samuel Myrick; second marriage to Daniel C. Miller. The information is from the respective marriage licenses]. Mary Jane Myrick's tombstone gives her date of birth as 1828 in Dearborn County, Indiana; and b. John A. Buffington, whose date of birth is August 12, 1833 in Indiana. [That information comes from his death certificate. April 29, 1908] c. There may be other children unknown at this time. 4. The inference of the relationship between Mary Jane and John A. Buffington comes from "The History of Knox County Iliinois, Its Cities, Towns and People", Vol. II , S. J. Clarke Publishing Co., Chicago, 1912 . At page 70 the text states, ". [speaking of Daniel C. Miller the second husband of Mary Jane] From his first wife he secured a legal separation and afterward wedded Mary Jane Myrick, a wido and the sister of John Buffington." 5. Hannah Buffington died 21 Feb 1890 and was buried in Haynes Cemetery located near Delong, Knox County, Illinois. 6. Hannah Buffington's grave site, and the grave site of Cynthia Lewis Buffington [the wife of John A. Buffington] are located in close proximity within the Haynes Cemetery. The grave of Mary Jane Myrick and her husband Samuel Myrick are near the first two graves. 7. I would appreciate any information leading to the maiden name of Hannah, the given name of her husband, the site of their wedding or the existence of other children of their marriage.
