I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice for obtaining an obituary? I'm looking for a man named Jim Salts of Galesburg, Knox County, Illinois. I have his birthdate as August 1859 and his death date as 17 Jul 1939 in Galesburg. >From what I can tell, his father was Leland Arthur Salts and his mother was Eunice Fenton (she died sometime before 1880 after being hit by lightning - in Kansas or Nebraska). Jim was married to Dorsey Smith and had three children...Nina, Harry and Harvey. Many thanks. Sam

Served in the Civil War Pvt Co E. 10th Reg Ill Inf, volunteered 30 Jan 1864 and discharged 13 June 1865; married 30 Jan 1868 at Oneida Illinois to Susan Henrietta Beadle. She is the expert so I'll put down what I have from her book and work and she can correct anything I have wrong or that is incomplete. Helene and I are Fink second cousins" I would like to purchase the book mentioned above and would like to exchange info with you both. I got my info from Dorothy C. Burt; a very nice Benton Co. Gen. Soc. Volunteer. I have very little info as I am just beginning my search. I am doing this research for my son-in-law, Randy Goodell, his mother Karen Marie Fink Goodell, died when he was quite young. Due to a rift between the Goodell's and the Fink's, Randy knew very little about his mother. In fact he has no pictures of any of the Fink's, he only had a very small picture of his mother and when they moved to the state of Washington that was lost. His Grandparents and many of his other Fink ancestors are buried in Pleasant Valley Cemetery in Philomath, Benton, Oregon. Thanks to other genealogists I have found quite a bit about the family. I do not have much proof of the validity of the info that I do have. But a lot of it does match up with the census records as far as locales and migration of the Fink family. I am compiling as much info into a notebook with a "more to come" promise for Christmas. They live in the Seattle area and I am going out there for the holidays. If the weather is fit we hope to go to Benton County, if not now maybe in the spring. Randy had given up on finding any info about his family and did not even speak of them very often. Then when he saw how much I had on my daughter's family, he began to hint that he would like to know about his own. Stanley and Edith Fink are his grandparents and I would really like to find more about them and maybe locate someone with pictures of them. I am sorry this is so long, but I wanted you to know why the book that was mentioned above might be the key I need. At this point anything is more than what we have already. Thank you for your reply and your info. Please let me know if it is possible to get a copy of the "Fink" book and where I might contact more Fink relatives of Randy's. She is the expert so I'll put down what I have from her book and work and she can correct anything I have wrong or that is incomplete. Helene and I are Fink second cousins. Andrew Wellington Fink bn 18 Dec 1845 Maquon, Knox, IL to Elijah and Katherine/Catherine (Townsend) Fink. Is there another Andrew W Fink who was the son of Josiah and Polly Eaton Fink bn 1838? What sources name an Andrew W Fink as a child of Josiah and Polly? The basis we have for determining that Andrew W. Fink's, bn 1845, parents were Elijah and Catherine/Katherine: 1. Helene found an obituary for Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Fink Morse in her grandmother's papers. Upon this newspaper clipping, Fannie Fink Kline had written: "A.W. Fink's sister". Fannie Fink Kline is a dtr of A.W. and Susan Henrietta Fink. 2. In the "Portrait & Biographical Album of Knox County IL" 1886, the portrait of William E. Morse says that he married Miss Mary E Fink, daughter of Elijah and Catherine (Townsend) Fink in 1860. 3. Catherine Fink remarried W.E. Morse's father, Eusebias Morse, after Elijah Fink died between 1845 and 1850. Catherine and Eusebias were married 31 Oct 1850; per Knox Co ILL marriage records. 4. Andrew Wellington Fink married Susan Henrietta Beadle married 30 Jan 1868; that from Knox Co IL marriage records. Susan Henrietta's maiden name being Beadle comes from her death certificate, her parents raised one of her dtrs,, she had an unmarried sister who visited; it is well established that her maiden name was Beadle. 5. A cousin in California wrote to Fannie Fink Kline and sent two letters to her that A.W. Fink had written when he served in the Civil War. This cousin's death cert. names I.P. Fink as her father. We believe that to be Ira Pearsal Fink, and believe him to be an older brother to A.W. I am very interested in learning about your Andrew W. Fink and the sources you have for him. Do you know anything about a Nelson Fink or an Abram Fink? Our Finks are related. Ours are Christian & Elizabeth (Suts) Fink, Andrew C. & Maria (Sutz) Fink, Elijah & Catherine (Townsend) Fink, then Andrew W. and Susan Henrietta (Beadle) Fink. Do you know who our 1st common Fink ancestor might be? Thank you for any answers you can give. Marie Peer

You might contact the funeral director for the family member who made the arrangements. While they might not give you the particulars, they might be willing to pass on your name, address, email address, etc. to the family they had contact with. You could go from there.
