    1. [ILKNOX] History of Irish, from Columbia County, to Knox County in the 1850s
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: NORTON, COFFEY, FLYNN, O'CONNOR, RYAN Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.illinois.counties.knox/3822/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi all I would appreciate it.... if someone could me another site for the history of the Irish arriving in Knox County, Illinois from Columbia County, New York....below is all I have of that history. I would like the whole history. I always thought I could go back to it, but I find this web address no longer works. http://www.iltrails.org/knox/Immigrants/Irish.html In Columbia County, New York, the Shaker settlements were flourishing in the '50s. Many of the immigrants took the stage at Albany and obtain employment in and about Lebanon. The Tilden family of that place, as well as the Shakers, were large employers; and just over the line in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, Barker Brothers, manufacturers of drugs, added many other Irish to their payroll. There, at Lebanon and at Pittsfield, many a lad and lassie from opposite counties of Ireland met for the first time and either married out right or plighted their troth until they should lay up a little and meet again on the plains of Illinois, for this stop in the Mohawk Valley was merely to get their bearings and earned a prize of a railroad ticket to the state where it was rumored the Gales, Moshers, and Ferrises would pay higher wages and so open the door to larger opportunities. In Pittsfield was formed the clan of Redingtons, Hobins, Herleys, Clareys, Hewitts, Magners, Mackeys, Browns, Franeys, O'Connells, and Haleys. From Lebanon came another group made up of the Nortons, Penderghasts, Maleys, Coffeys, Minihans, Milans, Shays, Nashes, O'Connors, Ryans, Hustons, Carmodys, Flynns, Torticells, Slatterys; as Mrs. Margaret Nash Minihan puts it, "We followed each other like the ducks. " Thank you, Mary

Surnames: Zorfas Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.illinois.counties.knox/2030.4.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi Judy - I am not 100% sure where Knox County, all I know is that it is in Illinois. My Grandfather was Nathan Zorfas from Belarus, Russia. He came here with at least 3 other brothers, but he was very young. The story goes that my great grandfather (who no one knows the name of) got remarried and settled in the Chicago area. Quite some time ago, I got inspired and decided to search for my roots and found an Abraham Zorfas in Knox County, so I went to the Knox County website and posted my message. I have met only a few other Zorfas' in my life, and we all seem to be able to go back to the same level as my grandfather - getting past this is more difficult. The funny thing is that every Zorfas I have ever met says the same thing - we are all intrigued by our last name because it is so unique. I have seen it spelled with 2 s's, but rarely is it the way we spell it. My grandfather and his brothers all settled in Brooklyn, NY. My Grandfather, who was one of the youngest of that generation, was born in 1900. When I was doing my "research", I did notice a Frank Zorfas who naturalized in Boston in 1911. It was fascinating to me, because it was the first time I saw a Zorfas that didn't seem related to me (at least on the level of my Grandfather), based on the stories that "our Zorfas'" were only in Brooklyn and Chicago. But, the more I look into this, the more I learn. If you could shed more light on this, I'd love to hear it. Thanks so much for responding. Lauren Zorfas P.S. Zorfas is my maiden name which I never changed when I got married, so I'm a "real" Zorfas.

    1. [ILKNOX] Obituary for Zadock W. STEVENS of Knoxville, Knox, IL
    2. d.young
    3. Could sks with access to the "Obituaries from Galesburg Newspapers" look for an obituary for Zadock White STEVENS, formerly of Knoxville, Knox County, Illinois, who apparently died between 1870 and 1880? Zadock was born 26 September 1810 at Danbury, Connecticut. He and Ann S. Barnes or Anna Barnes were married 01 January 1842. Sometime before 1855 Zadock, his wife, Ann and four children relocated to Knoxville, Knox County, Illinois. Zadock, a stone mason, and his family appear on the 1860 and 1870 census of Knoxville, Illinois. The 1880 Knoxville census, however, lists the family as Ann Stevens, widow, and four children. No record has so far been found on the death and burial of Zadock. Possibly Zadock died while away from Knoxville and was interred at the location of his death. If so, it is hoped that notice of his death may have reached the Galesburg or other newspapers near his home. David Young Harrisburg, PA

Charles Wesley KELLEY, b. ~1833 probably in Maryland. He married Mariah AXTELL on 28 Feb 1858 in Knox County, IL. They had one child, Wesley Jacob Kelley, born 2 Dec 1859 in Abingdon, Knox Co, IL. Recently I found a death notice for Wesley Kelley mentioning his father died in 1859 after being struck by lightning. (Finally a definite year!!!) Probably resident of Abingdon. Charles Wesley Kelley has been such a "brick wall" for myself and others I'm reluctant to purchase the above mentioned book or request appropriate Knox County newspaper microfilm, or contact the Court HOuse without a full date...... Any leads, information or suggestions greatly appreciated. Related Info: Mariah born 20 June 1837 in Penn; died 28 April 1881 in Mills Co, IA; daughter of Thomas Axtell and Sarah Robb. Later wife of John Hosick. Many Thanks! ~Jill

    1. Re: [ILKNOX] [GN] Fink Research
    2. A place to look for Oregon information is http://oregon.gov/OSL/GRES/genealogy.shtml. That address will reach a volunteer for genealogical society at the state library. There may be Benton Co. cemetery book, or other materials there, or contacts. I don't know if there's a genealogy society in Philomath, but there would be in Corvallis, the county seat. I believe I've heard there's a genealogy collection in Philomath, maybe at the museum. The Corvallis library should have microfilmed old newspapers. The University of Oregon library has had a project of filming all the Oregon newspapers they could get access to. One copy of the film was given to the library or community, I believe. That is my reason for saying there should be filmed Benton paper in Corvallis. I live east of Salem, haven't had occasion to go to the Corvallis area for a number of years. Helen

    3. Out of curiosity I checked the Illinois Statewide marriage index and found the following: Annie Bengston married Swan Anderson on March 27, 1869 in Knox County. Annie C. Bengston married Charles Peterson on September 2 1882 in Rock Island County. I don't know if either of these are your relative, but you can check further by going to the website at www.sos.state.il.us/GenealogyMWeb/Marriage Seach Sesrvlet. This is a great resource for seaching for marriages of family members. The only thing I could find was some general comments, made by a variety of persons in an article in "The Zephyr" at the link below: http://www.thezephyr.com/maytag2003.htm I then emailed various people: The Zephyr, The City of Galesburg, The Chamber of Commerce, A Knox county history site, and I posted a query on: http://boards.ancestry.com/localities.northam.usa.states.illinois.counties.knox/3814/mb.ashx The Zephyr responded immediately, but the best response came from Faith Burdick, of the Galesburg Public Library, where the City of Galesburg had forwarded my question. Below is my summary, followed by Faith's notes in answer to my questions. I am sending them to you, so as to spread this information around a bit, so that the next time someone googles a question like mine there will be a more ready answer. MAJOR EMPLOYERS IN THE CITY OF GALESBURG: The major former employers in the City of Galesburg, in chronological order, are as follows: 1. CBQ: 1849-1970 2. Santa Fe: 1859-1995 3. It was sold in 1973 and ultimately closed in 1979. *Gates Rubber Company opened in 1911. It was bought by Tomkins PLC of London, England in 1995. They began transferring jobs to Mexico in 2001. The last hosemaking jobs were transferred sometime in mid-2003. I think some administrative offices or something may still be there. *Gales/Outboard Marine opened in 1937 and closed on July 13, 1984. *Butler Manufacturing opened in 1939. It was bought by Bluescope Steel Limited of Australia in 2001 and closed on Aug. 31, 2005. *The first sections of interstate 74 around Galesburg were reported opened for traffic in the Dec. 22, 1965 issue of the Register-Mail.
