I am searching for Sr. Mary Bernette , who was at St. Mary's 'old' hosp. in 1953. Was a temporary assignment in the Pediatrics Dept. Her home area was Dickinson Co./Iron Mountain, Michigan. She was finishing a nursing program to become a Reg. Nurse in the early 50's when I met her in Galesburg. Info found recently is that she may have left the convent in the 60's. She was of the Franciscian order which had hospitals in Galesburg,IL., Escanaba and Marquette MI. and Marinette, Wi. and Peoria, I believe. I have spoken with a family member of her now deceased professional skating partner in Iron Mountain, MI. Gleaning this tidbit... Her birth first name *might* have been Barbara. She could be 75 to 80 yrs. of age today. To anyone who might have known her, or knows of her now, I would kindly appreciate hearing from you. ginny
----- Original Message ----- From: "Jeff Simmons" <jeff.simmons5@insightbb.com> Made it to the Knox College library in the snow today, and was able to learn a little bit about the Abingdon Christian Church. Abingdon Christian(or Church of Christ at Abingdon) had supported the Abingdon College, and even held their services in one of their buildings. In 1874, a furor occurred over the presidency of Abingdon College, which resulted in about 1/4 of the membership of the Christian Church leaving. This group formed what was known as the "Jefferson St. Congregation". I do not know how long this group survived. This schism ended up causing the demise of Abingdon College-it merged with Eureka College in 1885. There had been a point in between 1874 and 1885 where the college had actually closed up. I am currently working at finding a membership list for Abingdon Christian Church for that period, but meanwhile, I have a letter from what appers to be members of the "Jefferson Congregation", trying to reach a peaceable agreement, and to apparently rejoin the church. They had all been excluded by the mother church, although there was considerable dispute over who was in the right, what was considered as correct procedure, etc. There were even several newspaper articles, mention of someone being knocked down some stairs by a blow from a fist(by the president, I believe), and even severe vandalism of the college president's house! It basically boiled down to, as I see it, whether the church would be able to keep control of the college. It appears they lost control, which led to a stop in their supporting the school, which led to the demise of the college. The group that wished to rejoin the Christian Church sent them this letter: Abingdon, ILL June 13th 1874 To the Church of Christ at Abingdon Dear Brethren: We the undersigned members of the Church of Christ at Abingdon, feeling aggrieved at the proceedings of a majority of the Congregation on the 26th day of April last, and believing that the Church will not prosper under existing circumstances, and earnestly desiring that the alienation now existing among us, may be speedily removed; Would therefore request that you appoint a committee to confer with a committee which may be appointed by us looking to an amicable adjustment of the differences between us. Hello, I have been told that it is possible to buy copies of the old records of the Meridian Church, which was outside of Abingdon, and of the Christian Church to which many of the Meridian parishioners moved. However, I cannot locate a source for these. Could anyone tell me where I might buy these, what they are called, or possibly do a lookup for me? Thanks, Foxie, for your very informative reply to my request on 02/07/2007. I was not aware that the original burial records for the Knoxville Cemetery had been lost and that the reconstruction of those records was obtained by reading the tombstones in the cemetery thirty years ago last summer. Perhaps others may also not realize that the current records may be incomplete if tombstones were not found or were illegible for burials before the mid 1990s. I was familiar with the STEVENS whom you name, but the earlier ones were the problem. David Young

I have a full listing around here some place just haven t gotten it all online yet. Also, they could be buried in the Knoxville cemetery and just have a tombstone. The Knoxville Cemetery records were lost How they got them back was going out and reading the tombstones that were in the cemetery thirty years ago last summer. I've helped with some of them on updates and adding more people who I've found through research and people like you looking for someone who should be there but can't find them. Plus, a few mistakes as we are all human and make them. It's the only way they had of finding out or getting some idea of who was buried in the cemetery. They didn't have register the deaths, births, or even a marriage until the year of 1916 but in the year of 1877 some of them did not all because some of my family didn't see fit to register theirs either and then I find it harder to track them down. Circuit Clerk would have probate. That is assuming there was an estate worth probating. In addition to estate records, one should also search for land and property records and court records. It may be that there was no probate, but other records might have been created. County Recorder would have vitals. Vitals were recorded as early as 1877 at the county level, but not every event got recorded.
