I'm trying to establish a connection between my Elizabeth Smith Hale & George W. Smith. I think they are probably brother & sister, but can't be certain. A George W. Smith is living next to Solomon Smith, my Elizabeth's father, in the 1840 census in Gallia Co. Ohio. This George W. Smith married Martha Calhoon Dec. 26, 1838 in Gallia Co. I believed she died shortly thereafter. On Jan. 30, 1844 a George W. Smith married Sarah Shoemaker. This George moved to Knox Co. Illinois about the same time as my Elizabeth. My Elizabeth married Vinton Hale Aug. 13, 1844. Vinton's brother James Riley Hale is listed in the 1850 census living with the Shoemaker family. In 1851 he married a Mary Shoemaker in Knox Co. Illinois. I believe this George W. Smith moved to Kansas. My Elizabeth died in Knox Co. Illinois May 21, 1899, don't need info on her or her children. What is really needed is something listing Solomon's children! . There is no will or cemetery listing for him in Gallia Co. Ohio where he was still living in the 1860 census. You might try getting a birth certificate for one or all of the children to see if it lists the mother's maiden name. The first application of his trade in the county was the building of a barn for Governor William McMurtry after which he built a school house in District No. 1.
