I have posted several mystery photos of friends or relatives of the Buffington Family of Knox Co., IL. I was wondering if anyone could identify the building in the photo at the following link. http://www.ancientfaces.com/research/photo/395777 I would like to know whether or not is was taken in Galesburg. The date written on the photo is Nov. 15, 1931. Does anyone recognize the man? Check out my other mystery photos with a Buffington /Knox County, Illinois connection, too! Thanks for your help. Sharon
Hello, My great-aunt, Jean Elizabeth Truitt, was in the Army Nurses Corps during the latter part of WWI. I haven¹t found her name included on the rolls. Can you tell me how I can get this done? I have documentation. Thanks a bunch, Sherry (Krohn) Bradley 1325 Park Avenue SW Apt. 108 Albuquerque, NM 87102

Hannah [maiden name is unknown ] Buffington the, apparent mother of John A. Buffington, was born 23 March 1785 in either: a. Hanover, Greenbriar (sic) County, Virginia [this is on her tombstone]; or b. Pennsylvania [this information is from the federal census reports of 1860, 1870 and 1880] Orange Twp, Knox County, IL. 2. The given name of Hannah Buffington's spouse is not known. The date of birth and place of birth of her spouse is not known. The site of Hannah's marriage is not known. 3. It appears that Hannah and her spouse had at least two children: a. Mary Jane Buffington [First marriage to Samuel Myrick; second marriage to Daniel C. Miller. The information is from the respective marriage licenses]. Mary Jane Myrick's tombstone gives her date of birth as 1828 in Dearborn County, Indiana; and b. John A. Buffington, whose date of birth is August 12, 1833 in Indiana. [That information comes from his death certificate. April 29, 1908] c. There may be other children unknown at this time. 4. The inference of the relationship between Mary Jane and John A. Buffington comes from "The History of Knox County Iliinois, Its Cities, Towns and People", Vol. II , S. J. Clarke Publishing Co., Chicago, 1912 . At page 70 the text states, ". [speaking of Daniel C. Miller the second husband of Mary Jane] From his first wife he secured a legal separation and afterward wedded Mary Jane Myrick, a wido and the sister of John Buffington." 5. Hannah Buffington died 21 Feb 1890 and was buried in Haynes Cemetery located near Delong, Knox County, Illinois. 6. Hannah Buffington's grave site, and the grave site of Cynthia Lewis Buffington [the wife of John A. Buffington] are located in close proximity within the Haynes Cemetery. The grave of Mary Jane Myrick and her husband Samuel Myrick are near the first two graves. 7. I would appreciate any information leading to the maiden name of Hannah, the given name of her husband, the site of their wedding or the existence of other children of their marriage. Samuel Lewis and his family are listed in the 1850 census for Twp 9N IE, Knox, Illinois; Roll: m432_113; Page; 324. Samuel gave his birthplace as Pennsylvania and age as 50. Nancy, his wife, gave her age as 35 and her place of birth as Ohio. 2. The family had 10 members: Samuel, Nancy and eight children. The eldest three children were stated to have been born in Ohio. Cynthia, aged 16, Samuel, aged 15 and Martha, aged 12 were said to have been born in Ohio while Joseph, aged 9, was said to have been born in Illinois. 3. The elder Samuel Lewis does not appear in the 1860 census, but his wife Nancy and their youngest child, Samantha, do appear on the1860 census for Orange Twp, Knox, Illinois; Roll: m653_195; Page: 682; Image: 348. I suspect that the elder Samuel died after the 1850 census, but I have no evidence to sustain that belief. 4. Cynthia Lewis married John A. Buffington on 23 Oct 1853 Knoxville in Knox County, Illinois. They had a family of ten children all of whom were born in Knox County, Illinois. 5. I am interested in the relatives of Samuel Lewis, ca DOB 1800, to determine any connection between Lewis and Hannah Buffington, ca DOB 1785 VA or PA, and to trace the background of Cynthia Lewis Buffington. Dear Listers, We are looking for the Naturalization and Citizenship Record for Henry AREA in Knox County. Could someone check for this record for us, please? On the Illinois Marriage Index Henry is listed, as Kenny ARIE. Please check under ARIE for him. This is a real brick wall. According to the 1850 census he was born in Hannover, Germany. The Family Tradition is that he changed his name, when he arrived in America. Thank you. In the 1870 federal census, he is located in Washington, Tazewell Co., IL and is a wagon maker. A history of Washington, IL makes reference to two sisters, i.e., Louisa who married Rev. John Borland and Edith who married Henry Meadows. Apparently, Henry died and Edith remarried, i.e., William Holland. For what it is worth, a Joseph Buckminster Miles was also residing in Washington -- died at that location in 1860. I think Joseph and Solomon S. Miles may have been brothers. Kansas became a state in 1861 and soon after the Civil War, many people migrated from Illinois, Iowa, Indiana, etc., because land was cheap and the country was moving westward. C., I would like to know that, too. My husband's GGgrandfather left Stephenson County IL, moved to Iowa in 1851 for 5 years and ended up in Bourbon County KS. Probably the land opened up to settlers, that's what I have thought, anyway.
