The article includes the names of over 400 men who composed several companies of the Illinois Militia in western Hancock County. I would like to learn more about as many of them as possible. Lists of extensive reference material used in writing the article are given throughout and at the end. Robert Webb Carthage, Illinois

    3. Thank you so much, that is very kind of you. Thank you very much for the info on Sadie A. Haptonstall and Alvin and Priscilla Yelm Rice. Sorry to be so slow at thanking you. It has taken me a while to 'recover' and catch up from hosting my Grandma Faye (Rice) Allen's 97th birthday party:) It was awesome and we had 62 people here! Everyone gave her a rose (which is our custom for her birthday, as she always grew roses) and she had more than 62 of them. When one of her daughters asked her if she really wanted to take ALL the roses back to assisted living, she said "What do you think?" LOL She always puts them outside her door in the hallway so everyone can enjoy them. Thanks again, Candace On Jul 16, 2007, at 8:43 AM, Mary Moeller wrote: During this week I am going to be spending time up at the library. 1. [ILKNOX] Mead Family Reunion - Galesburg
    2. Lesli
    3. Could someone please check the Register-Mail to see if there was a Mead family reunion in 2006? Previous reunions have been held about the 3rd Sunday in August. I am looking for one of the officers presiding over the reunion from last year or if there is mention of the officers for 2007. Some reunion papers, as well as many news clippings and letters have come into my possession and I would like to get it to the Mead family as they are not my relation. Your help would be much appreciated. Sincerely, Lesli Rice Shaheen

    3. I am interested in finding any information on my 2nd great grandparents, George Gould and Charlotte Hensley Gould and their daughter, Lucinda, who are said to have come to Kansas from Galesburg, Illinois about 1860. Lucinda is said to have remained in Galesburg to finish school and was one of the first school teachers in Wilson Co., Kansas after her father returned to Galesburg to bring her to Kansas. Any information regarding them would be appreciated including where in Galesburg she would have been attending school. Thank you for your help. I have one of the most extenstive biographies packages online for Knox county. I have the whole biography section of the 1912 by Albert J. Perry online. about 700 of them out of the 1886 P & B. some of them from the 1878 which some of them are really smaller bios and such but still give you something. the whole book of the 1899 township histories is and biographical section is online go to my Knox Index page and click on the History Book link. it will take you to the History books Index page. Hope this helps you out in your quest for you ancestors. 2. I am familiar with the location of the Salem Cemetery. It is easily accessed though somewhat off the beaten path. You would not just pass it driving down the main roads. have heard of the otheeer two you mention but have never been to them. Email me direct and I will try to help you further. Also curious about who you are looking to find in Salem. 3. Both Cemeteries are still used and easily accessible. You don't need permission. Uniontown Cemetery is south of Rte 8 between Maquon and Yates City at corner of Bear School Road and Knox Road 1900 East. Maquon Cemetery is about 1.5 miles northeast of Maquon in Haw Creek Township on Knox Hwy 20. I also have lots of family in both. 2. Bernie&Carol Kuse
    3. Going through my grandmother's things I found a clipping headed Obituary. It praises the life of Geo. W.Enke. There are no dates or names anywhere in it. The only clues I have are "At the time of his demise he occupied the position of Justice of the Peace in our city, the duties of which he filled with credit. For a long term of years he served as sheriff of Knox County, Ills.... He leaves to mourn his sudden departure, a wife, one son and two grand-daughters, who were depenent upon him for support..." To paraphase: on Friday he was fine, on Saturday he took sick, on Sunday he died, and on Monday they buried him. From other sources I have him married to Silvia Upson, b 1827. I think he was a brother of my great-grandmother, Rozina Enke Elwell; and they both may be the children of John and Ann Enke, Knox County IL On the back of the clipping was an article on a "Circus Wrecked. Five men instantly killed and others badly injured. On the 4th inst. John Robinson's circus train was wrecked at Ames, near Fergus Falls, (?)nn." The dead and injured were from all over the United States. "A decrease in illiteracy in the state during (?) past five years....This year it is reduced....one half what it was 1880, and it was then lower than any other (?) in the Union." "Julia Ward Howe called the Woman"s Congress to order in Des Moines on the 7th. She then introduced Mrs. H. L. T. Wolcott, of Mass., to read a paper..." I would greatly appreciate any help with more information on the Enkes and Elwells. Carol in Kansas
