    3. Hi Jan, Been awhile since I looked at this but the original manuscript is in the Stoneberg Papers at Knox College Archives. Phillip Stoneberg was the editor of the 2 vol. Henry Co. history where this appeared. It was published around 1910. Galesburg Public Library and Knox College would both have this. Kewanee Public Library has it on the open but non-ciruclating shelves, or did last time I was in there about a year ago. Rock Island County Historical should also have it, perhaps Rock Island Public. Can't recall now where you live but the books were pretty well distributed. Also, about 99% sure that Illinois State Historical Library in Springfield would have it. I don't own a copy or would look it up for you. Hope this helps. If you can't find it I could try emailing as an attachment a transcript of the manuscript I did a few years ago, complete with typos. Ha! Was going to rework it for a Knox Co. book but that is a dormant project. 3. Hi, Jack... I happen to have at home a book from the Library, "History of Knox County Illinois, Its Cities, Towns & People" by Albert J. Perry, Vol 1, published 1912 It's a VERY good book to peruse for area history!! There is not a "Gum's fort" nor a "Henderson Creek" specifically mentioned, but in the paragraphs about Henderson Township are a couple of references: p. 42 Indianas had corn fields on Sections 23 & 26 and cultivated the soil for years. In an early day, a well was dug on Section 30 near the creek. At a depth of 60 feet, the workmen found what seemed to be an Indian camping ground. Ashes, stumps and general rubbish fresh as if the fire had just gone out; a cedar log was also found. The indians lived in wigwams, helped the settlers make maple sugar and were friendly till the war broke out. Anticipating an Indian outbreak, the white settlers built two forts. One fort on Section 33 was named Lewis Fort. The other on Seciton 10 was unnamed. This township furnished a company of "minute Rangers" in the Black Hawk War." p424 "The next year (1830) came James McMurtry with his sons, William & James, and their families from Indiana. They came in August and settled on Section 3, on a quarter they bought of Riggs Pennington, paying $1.25 per acre; but afterward had to repurchase to secure a clear title. It was on their farm, on the NE 40 acres of Section 10, that the entire neighborhood assisted in building a fort, which would protect them from the Indians, into this the surrounding families before and during the Black Hawk War would often gather." On same page there IS this reference to GUM: "During the pring and summer (of 853), other came, among them were Jacob Gum, a Baptist minister, who preached the first sermon in 1829 at the residence of his son, John B. Gum, on Section 32. This two-room log cabin was the first county court house. Here the first circuit court was held on October 1, 1830. The judge presideing was the Hon. Richard M. Young, afterward United States Senator. Here also the first county election was held, Mr. Gum being elected the first county treasurer." Perhaps this is referring to what you are calling "Henderson Creek Settlement"? p. 424 "Henderson was the first township in Knox county to be settled by white men. It is well watered by the brranches which make up the head waters of Henderson river. Along these branches originally stood one of the finest groves of timber to be found anywhere in Illinois." Hope this helps ..... or at least helps give you a clue/lead to where/what you need to search next!! ~ Peggy Watcher881@aol.com wrote: > Looking for info on Gum's Fort, or Henderson creek settlement. > Jack

    3. Jack, Chapman's HISTORY OF KNOX COUNTY has accounts of the so-called forts of the Blackhawk War era. Also, in the Henry County history published around 1910 there is an account by Martha McMurtry Piatt which describes some of the incidents of the Blackhawk War in the Henderson Grove vicinity. I am not sure but it seems that some accounts interchange the names. Fort Lewis and Gum's Fort might have been the same. Fort Aggie (sp?) was in Rio Twp. Hope this helps. 3. I am looking for general information on the West family in Knox Co., I have two different books, some family tree diagrams, etc. which show that Almon Clark married Letitia Ann Trego and had the 4 daughers, Laura May, Cora, Emma, and Grace Lavinia. Well, my sister just arrived with some folders that she had from our mother, and in it was a set of 9 stapeled pages entitled Notes taken from The Conger Family of America published in 1973 by Helen Maxine Crowell. On the last page is described a family named West, John West, Galesburg, IL Charles (Charlie) West, Anita, Iowa Laura West "Aunt laura" m Allie Clark. Had Issue May Clark - my great grandmother Cora Clark Emma Clark Grace Clark (These are supposedly the daughters of Almon Clark and Letitia Ann Trego!) Hannah West m Uzziah Conger. They had many children, one named Crayton Conger who had a daughter named Alice whom we all called Cousin Alice! Well, she was a cousin if her sister married Almon Clark and was the mother of the 4 Clark girls. But that flies in the face of everything I have documented right now. If anyone has information regarding relationship between the West's, the Clark's and the Conger's, please let me know. Thanks in advance. Patricia Max
