    3. Kathleen, This may be an insane way to go about finding the music, but the Galesburg, IL, Rotary Club has a song book with Rotary theme songs......in 1972 they had one copyrighted by June Wyckoff. Some songs are take-offs of old original music. You may have luck contacting: ibrbn@hotmail.com who said "There are many songs that were written with Rotary as their theme. Some have original music. Some are sung to another familiar tune. I am in the process of researching the source and history of these songs. If you have any pertinent information on this subject, please contact me" Good luck, Linda Jenkins Wensel Researching Brisben in Knox Co., IL -----Original Message----- From: Kathleen Brooks <kbrooks@xcelco.on.ca> To: ILKNOX-L@rootsweb.com <ILKNOX-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Friday, August 04, 2000 10:53 PM Subject: [ILKNOX-L] Spoon River Waltz I am trying to find the music for a piece entitled "Spoon River Waltz" . 3. - I am trying to find any information on WELLS HICKMAN and MARY J. KING HICKMAN. They were married in Fulton County on February 12, 1866. They 'took in' and raised a baby boy named ALBERT MITCHELL MILLER who was born in Canton, Illinois on October 14, 1872. Unable to find any 'official' guardianship papers or birth records. I have checked at Fulton & McDonough Counties for these. WELLS and MARY J. HICKMAN moved to the Bushnell, Illinois area and that is where ALBERT MILLER was raised. Would like to find out if WELLS and MARY HICKMAN had any children of their own. WELLS HICKMAN b. d. 29 Dec 1922 at the age of 73 years BLK 10 LOT 3 SEC C MARY J. HICKMAN b. d. 16 Nov 1933 in Walnut Grove, Illinois BLK 10 LOT 3 SEC C in the same plot of the Bushnell Cemetery is : DAVID M. KING b. 1820 d. 28 Dec 1905 BLK 10 LOT 3 SEC C NANCY KING b. 1830 d. 25 Feb 1905 BLK 10 LOT 3 SEC C I believe that DAVID and NANCY are MARY J. KING HICKMAN's parents but have not found any 'official' proof. ALBERT MITCHELL MILLER married a GERTRUE MAE HAYWORTH CAIN and raised a family in the Bushnell, Illinois area. ALBERT MILLER is my husband's grandfather & I am trying to find out who ALBERT's parents/grandparents were. ALBERT's daughter ( who is 80 years old ) said that all the information that she ever knew was that ALBERT's mother died when he was born and that his father was a Doctor and died a few years after he was born. ALBERT MILLER passed away on September 14, 1955 and is buried in the KING plot in the Bushnell Cemetery. I find this unusual in that he is laid to rest in the KING section. This would be the maiden name of the woman who raised ALBERT. I wonder if ALBERT was born to a sister of MARY J. KING HICKMAN ? I would certainly appreciate if anyone would have any possible leads for me to check out. Thanks ! Carolyn J. Miller millercw@netins.net

    3. You might want to check the Victoria Public Library. Sorry, don't know the phone number. A few years ago the librarian, Rachel Gibbs, pulled a Copley Twp. book from a bottom file drawer. It had some decisions made by Gardner Cherrington, a great uncle, who had been a J.P. in Copley Twp. They were fun to read, mostly disputes over fences and minor disagreements; matters that would go to small claims court or "People's Court", today. Worth a try, at least. Hope this helps. 2. In my research in Southern Illinois I have found in the book "The Blackhawk War 1831-1832; " the following; 1. A letter from "Henderson River Settlers to the Commanind officer of Illinois volunteers". It is a letter stating that the local people are concerned about thier position with respect to the indians. They were afraid of attacks. THis letter is signed by Charles Hansford, William McMurtry, John B. Gum, and Riggs Pennington. They are referred to as the " committee of Vigilance for the settlement on the Head of Henderson river". The notes for this letter state "The settlement at teh head of Henderson River was also known as the Henderson Settlement, Henderson Grove Settlement, and Gum's Fort. It encompassed part or all of present Henderson Township, Knox county and consisted of ' a large body of rich timbered land , surrounded with dry, fertile, first rate prairies'. The Fort itself was on the south side of Henderson Grove, probably near the home of John B Gum." There are other references to Gum's fort as well. I was wanting to find out more about it specifically. Also, does anyone know about migration to southern Missouri in the mid to late 1830s. I know my family went south to Mo, and I know that there were some of the Gum Family there too.
