    3. Have any of you tried looking up land records for Illinois at the Bureau of Land Management site online? You can see the "actual" land records!! It's neat! Go to: http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/ I have even found middle names for the person I was looking for which was an added bonus! 3. You'd need to know which Section the land is in, but looking at a plat map page I photocopied yesterday, it looks like Township 10 North Range 4 East ....and I'm not sure of the principal meridian ...although I think it is 3 East. If you're looking for land records, try checking with the County Tax Recorder & seeing when taxes were paid.... naturally, every county has a "different" way of recording things (sigh... for every type of record you are looking for, it seems), but you can learn the land description from the tax bill/record. ~ Peggy "Weaver, Judy" wrote: > Does anyone know what the land track township number is for ELBA? 3. Gina, I think this would be too early for the orphan trains. We didn't have any trains in Knox Co. until the last days of 1854. I am of the opinion that the first train into Chicago from the East was after 1850, though close to that date. I associate orphan trains with the last decades of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Hope this is some help. There were some Clarks who settled in Orange Twp and buried at Haynes Cemetery if that is of any help. 3. Here are a couple of great sites about the Orphan Trains: Orphan trains of Kansas http://kuhttp.cc.ukans.edu/carrie/kancoll/articles/orphans/ "Beginning in 1854, charitable institutions in New York City began sending orphans on trains to the west to find new families, feeling that the children would fare better out west than on the streets of New York. Orphan trains arrived in Kansas between 1867 and 1930, and some 5000-6000 children were placed in Kansas homes..... ~~~~~~ http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/amex/orphan/ The American Experience "In 1853, Brace founded the Children's Aid Society to arrange the trips, raise the money, and obtain the legal permissions needed for relocation. Between 1854 and 1929, more than 100,000 children were sent, via orphan trains, to new homes in rural America. Recognizing the need for labor in the expanding farm country, Brace believed that farmers would welcome homeless children, take them into their homes and treat them as their own. His program would turn out to be a forerunner of modern foster care. My objective is to discover the parents of my gggrandmother, RUTH [or something similar, such as RUHANNA, or possibly RUAMMA, etc] HANNA(H) WILLIAMS. I believe that "RUTH" could have been born in NJ. I know that my ggrandfather, GEORGE CHRISTOPHER b 19 DEC 1846 in Fulton Co IL, was born before she married ROBERT CRAIG BENSON 30 Dec 1851. ROBERT CRAIG B was born in WVA. I believe that RUTH could be a middle name or even another name actually, close to RUTH tho. I know I am stretching my research arms, but I have been searching for her parents for quite a few years, and she is still a complete mystery!! Any help would be appreciated. Any clue or fact will be received w/joy!! So thank you to anyone who may have some information for me. I am Nancy/IL
