Probably not a son, unless they had decided to keep the father's surname (as many did at that point in time in Sweden). Otherwise, a son would have assumed the surname of Carlsson. Since both of the sons we know about had emigrated to the US in the early 1860s, it would have to be a different son -- one that we don't know about. It's pretty unlikely there is a connection -- but let's keep our eyes open. Thanks for responding. Tom

Sharon: When I read the above, I thought that the name "Carl Magnus Mansson" was familiar, so I checked our database -- and he is familiar. Well, maybe -- that is also the name of my great-great-grandfather. My information is that he was born 15 Oct 1815 at Skeda, Östergötland län, Sweden. I show him with (at least) two sons, Johan August and Carl Gustaf, who initially used the surname Carlsson in Sweden, but adopted "Freeburg" in America. There was also a daughter, Clara Ulrika, but the last information we have on her was moving to Tjärstad parish in 1864. Certainly the naming is unusual enough to warrant my inquiry; it is also common enough that there may be no connection. Since we know little about the family after the 1864, it's entirely possible that they moved to Kalmar län -- it wasn't that far. However, since my Carl Magnus would have been 50 years old in 1865, it's a bit of a stretch (but still possible) that he would then have a newborn. What do you think -- any possibility?? Tom Lundeen

    1. [ILKNOX-L] Charles Mecum
    2. On 10/14/2000 I posted a message regarding a journal about the Jayhawkers. I have gotten further information about this document. The journal was written by Charles B. Mecum's son, Edwin Welton Mecum and entitled, "Memoirs of Edwin Welton Mecum". There were two copies. It was found in a landfill in Cedar City Utah and a man working at the landfill noticed it and didn't cover them up because he felt someone would be interested in them. By using the internet he found a family member to give it to. She then shared it with another Mecum descendent and that is where I got the transcribed copy of the 14 pages covering the Jayhawkers. The entire document is 200 pages long and is about the author and his parents and is in the author's handwriting. So that's the latest on the Mecum journal. Barb Clay Adams
