    2. Ginny
    3. This is a tough quest...I only recall it being called "Mrs. Gloss/Closs/??? Foundling home or orphans home. Her first name was Louise. It was there in the mid 1940's. Louise G./C. may even have been the social worker, or the administrator Does anyone have the faintest idea where this was located??, like a brick bldg./house south of Main St., or where a juvenile center later located? Where might the records from here now be located or available? Thanks so much, Ginny

    3. Ninth Edition of the Handy Book for Genealogists says " Statewide registration of births and deaths began in 1916. .....They are kept at the Division of Vital Records, State Department of Public Health, 605 West Jefferson Street, Springfield, IL 62702 (to verify current fees, call 217-782-6553). Some county clerks have birth and death records from 1877 to 1916, with a few as early as 1838........." Your best bet would be to contact the County Clerk of the county where your person died. I have paid anywhere from $7 to $10. Each county has different costs. 2. As a person who has always been interested in Galesburg history but still has lots to learn, when you hear of a terrible fire like the one at the Galesburg Library in 1958, what a loss. You wonder what you might have found about your family and the community had the fire not occurred. Barb

    3. I believe that Ben Bruner may have d. some time ago. (Check SSDI). I did learn something from your posting...I knew a Doyne Bruner, a friend from school, in fact I have a photo of him and me in Co. Springs c.1982-83. Now I know where "young" Doyne probably got his name.<:) The Ben Bruner's lived in Rio in the 1950's. I recall that Ben either had left the family by then or.....? died? So, YES, he was in the Rio area about 1957. Hope this helps a bit. Are the JENKINS, mentioned in your tagline, from Knox or Fulton Co.? 2. Hi We have a book that gives some history on the Publix Library. In 1902 A new Library was completed on the corner of South Broad and Simmons Street. In addition to the main reading room, the library contained the office of the Superintendent of Schools, Board of Education,, Grand Army Room, Childrens reading room, and for the convenience of the men, a Mens reading and smoking room. Andrew Carnegie, industralist who founded the Carnegie Corporation donated $50,000 toward the building. Library burned May 10 1958 was the worst fire in the city history. Destroyed was much of the history of Galesburg, and the state of Illinois and of course Abraham Lincoln Hope this helps. Ned & Marian Witherbee

    3. 11/26/00 Bob and Tom: I, too, do not know the origins of the library, but I sure did spend many wonderful hours there! The children's department on the first floor, and then walking up the huge (or so I thought at the time.......and I graduated when Tom did, Bob) stairway to the 2nd floor where I could begin reading "adult" books. I think the stairway was stone (maybe granite), but they could also have been wood. Does anyone remember about the interior of the library? I was really sad when the library burned. But I can say that I now work in a library that is not quite as structurally grand, but is defintely as good as, or possibly better, than the old Galesburg library. The few times that I still get to downtown Galesburg and drive by that corner, I can still see the library! Sorry for the reminiscing, but it was a big part of school-years life. I hope someone can give us the story of the library. I am sure it is quite interesting. Bob: Can't tell you when it was built, but it was built with a grant from the Carnegie Foundation, and was destroyed by a huge fire about 1957 or 1958. I vaguely remember going to GHS my senior year (1958), and seeing the stone walls standing for a few weeks after the fire. Tom Lundeen
