    1. [ILKNOX-L] Ennis, Gates, Loomis, Kightlinger, Bishop & Berfield Families in Knox County

    3. Posted on: Knox Co. Il Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Il/Knox/10986 Surname: Ennis, Gates, Loomis, Bishop, Brewer, Kightlinger, Kitlinger, Berfield ------------------------- I found some of my ancestors, John Ennis, on the Knox County History Internet page. The site appears to be an index to an 1878 history. I am also interested in any information about John 's parents whose names are listed under the same index (672). Additionally, I found John Ennis in the 1886 history under biography number 477. Would it be possible to get a transcript of these biographies and any other info? I am also looking for Gates' in that area and found one, but the information fields were blank so I can't tell if he's one in our line or not. Geo S. Gates is in index 676. Is there any more info on him? (I am looking for ancestors of Frank and Rueben Gates). Sincerely, Lisa McCann

    2. Diane Hicks
    3. Posted on: Knox Co. Il Query Forum Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/Il/Knox/10973 Surname: O'Brien, Falloon, Connor ------------------------- Are you looking for information on the family of Matthew O'Brien whose wife was Emily Jane? If so, his wife died 29 January 1916 in Galesburg, Knox, IL and left a will which was probated on 10 March 1916. In her will she names her husband Matthew O'Brien and the following children: L.F. (son), Matt Jr. (son), John (son), Frank M. (son), Emma (daughter), Rose (daughter), Mrs. Nora Lee (daughter), Mrs. Mary Shuck(?) (daughter), and Eugene F. (son). She names John O'Brien as Executor of the will. I am also interested in the O'Briens of Knox County. David O'Brien was b. in May, 1857 in (allegedly) Waterford, IRE, and died 30 May 1928 in Woodhull, Henry Co., IL. His father was Patrick O'Brien about whom I have no further information. David O'Brien married Julia Anna Falloon, who was b. in April 1862 in Onieda, Knox Co., IL and d. 12 Oct 1904. Julia's parents were Daniel Falloon and Anne Connor. David and Julia (Falloon) O'Brien had the following children (all probably born in Knox Co.): Helen Louise (1880-1933), James Henry (1883-1950), Terrance Paul (1884-1956), Thomas Francis (1887-1926), Annastasia (1889 - ?), George (1892-1894), Marguerite Julia (1894-1905), Mary/Mayme (1895-1976), Edward Percy (1899-1967), and an unknown female (born after 15 Jan 1880 and died before 1900). If anyone has further information on this family, particularly on David O'Brien's ancestors or where he came from, please contact me. I have additional information on some of the above-named children, as well as on the Falloons, if interested. Hope this helps! Diane

    3. Posted on: Knox Co. Il Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Il/Knox/10971 Surname: Johnson, Ahlstrand ------------------------- I'm looking for information regarding Knox County's 1860, I've been trying to find out information for my great great grandfather, John Peter Johnson/Johansson and his relatives. He was born in 1847 in Sweden and I believe he settled in Galesburg w/his parents in 1852. There is a chance some John Peter's relatives might be Gustaf and A. F. Johnson. I'm not sure where in Sweden they came from but will probably be provided in the 1860 census. Sometime between then and the 1870's they changed their name to Ahlstrand. I'm wondering if anyone knows what port of entry might have been used by the immigrants coming in from Sweden. It would be nice to know more about the Swedish Community in Galesburg during that time. Thanking you in advance for your help in this matter.

    1. [ILKNOX-L] New site
    2. A new genealogy database has officially opened to in-person visitors to Ellis Island.  This is a joint effort of the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation and the Mormon Church.  The time period covered is from 1892 to 1924, a period when about 70% of all immigrants to the U.S. entered via the Ellis Island portal.  My father and all but two of his brothers and both of his sisters did so, and would be included in these records. When fully operational in about a month, a website will also offer interactive research via the Internet.  Descendants of immigrants will be able to download documents and graphics and also to submit copies of their family documents, memorabilia and photos relating to their immigrant ancestors to add to the data presently available. http://www.ellisislandrecords.org/

    1. [ILKNOX-L] Merritt M. Clark Civil War Letter
    2. Bob Miller
    3. A very interesting letter written by Knox County resident Merritt M. Clark during the last days of the Civil War can be found on Ebay at http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1134529755. According to the seller, "This letter is four solid pages of text. This letter provides an outstanding glimpse into Mobile Alabama following the Siege of Spanish Fort and Battle of Blakely. It took quite some time to transcribe this, so read it in its entirety! :) At one point the writer (Merrit M. Clark, commander of Co. C 77th Illinois Infantry Volunteers) commends the Negro troops for their Gallantry in the battle and says they had to be stopped from butchering Rebels. Clark was likely an Abolitionist, being from Galesburg Illinois, a hotbed of Abolitionist activity and a graduate of Knox College, whose faculty were outspoken abolitionists. Read on, this has been my favorite letter out of this group of Clark's correspondence. This letter allows a glimpse into the last moments of the Civil war and affords us a very personal and very well put together assessment of Mobile Alabama following both of these battles." I hope it is of interest to someone. Bob Miller

    3. Sorry I am a while in checking this and responding. While Price's name appears on the list, it seems he opted for a different route and did not go through Death Valley . Those who did not go through Death Valley were not invited to Jayhawker Reunions and consequently their biographical material was not gathered. Sorry I could not be of more help. It seems that Robert Price, Norman Taylor and Cephas Arms travelled in the same wagon and they didn't go for the "short cut". :-) Smart move for them but too bad for us; their information hasn't been gathered.
