    3. Happened to be at Ziggy's and he had gotten a couple of calls already, on this book. It is the HISTORY OF ILLINOIS AND KNOX COUNTY by Bateman, Selby, Gale and Gale, pub. 1899, though. At least that's the book I was shown and no other Knox Co. book is available at this time. 3. Hi, Susan. This part of my Hall family has been hard to find very many facts for, so my data is pretty meager. But....here's what I know...... My gg-grandfather, David E. Hall, was married in Portage Co. OH (northeast corner of state) in Sept. of 1833. Census records give several different "birthplace" listings for him.....NY, or PA, or OH.......so I don't really know when he came to Portage County. We think his parents are Samuel and Silence Hall, a couple born in circa 1781 and circa 1776, and they are buried in the same plot as David and wife, in Hermon IL. I haven't been able to find any more of David or parents in Portage County during 1800-1833. David Hall married Elizabeth Potts, dau. of Joshua Potts. Sometime between Sept 1833 and Dec 1834 David and Elizabeth moved to Highland County OH, because their first children, twins, were born in Highland County in Dec. 1834. Next two children also born "Ohio" (obtained from census reports). I am assuming Highland Co,....even though assuming is "dangerous". The child born June 1838 was born in Ohio, and the next child was born April 1840 in Knox County IL. So sometime between 1838-1840 they came to Knox County IL. There is vague oral family history about some Quaker influence in this family at this time. But I can't figure out what it is. I think that there was a Quaker community in Fairfield OH (Highland/Clinton Co. area) and also one in Fulton Co. OH (south of Knox Co.). However, by the time I know anything of the family, they are Methodist. They may have just traveled with the Quakers (? a guess), or possibly were at one time Quaker, then married "out of the faith" and were removed from the Quaker records. (another guess). From data offered on the Knox County GenWeb site, I've noticed that several other families also came from Highland County, so they may all have come as a group. (?) 3. > Seeking information about Little John Coal Company, Victoria, Illinois. > Possibly operating 1940's and/or earlier. > > Thank you > > Anna V > Sioux City, Iowa > > **********I can add this..when I was a little girl the L.J.C. Co. had/used a train called the "DOLLY" it carried the coal from Victoria to Wataga, and on to Galesburg. I lived a mile from the tracks--we reveled in waving and getting return waves from the engineers. My Mother and I were nearly hit by that train one summer day!! I believe L.J. entended farther than the Victoria mines. There was also another name used for the mining there and I cannot recall it.... hopefully, someone else will remember. the 'nickname' was connected to the type of mining done there. It is now refurbished w/ a lake/s and home sites. My nsg. school roommate lives in that area now and she may be able to add more info.(<HINT HINT, Eunice>) We had old mines on our farm-shafts, or "doorways" some of which had been covered, and some had not. "Never go in there" was the word, but we did it all the time. It was cool and damp. Somewhere in my collection of 'memorbalia' I still have a piece of coal from there. My elderly neighbor man had four fingers missing from one hand-he always told me he lost those in that mine. True? Not sure.<G> It was a big source of employment for the area into the forties. Hope this is interesting for you. ginny Wisconsin

    3. Posted on: Knox Co. Il Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Il/Knox/10991 Surname: Thurman, Hall ------------------------- I expect you are aware of this already, but I know several THURMAN families came to Knox County from Highland County OH in the early 1800's. Perhaps you can find Jacob initially in Ohio? I am researching HALL family, who travelled the same locations/dates, and I remember seeing the THURMAN name in both places. One of my HALL ancestors married a THURMAN, but I don't find Jacob in any of my notes. (my connection is through John G. Thurman and Dorothy Strange).

    1. Re: [ILKNOX-L] 1860 Census - Johnson/Ahlstrund
    2. Re: Johnson/Ahlstrund surnames: Does your list of relatives in Galesburg include a Lars Johnson who married Clara Beckman? They were married in Knoxville and lived in Galesburg, I believe. They had a daughter, Carrie and a son, Martin. When Carrie was about 14 years old, her mother died leaving her and Martin alone. Lars had died about five years earlier from an accident in the foundery where he worked. Clara died from pneumonia, I believe. Martin lived in an orphanage, (so the family story goes), but Carrie was too old to enter the orphanage, so she lived with an uncle Gustav or Gustavson in Galesburg. If any of this looks familiar to you, please e-mail me on this list or privately at JudyByJudy@aol.com. However, my computer modem is out right now and it may be a while before I can get back to you (I'm using a friends tonight), but I will be back within a week or so. Thanks, Judy By Judy
