1878 Knox Co. History Wallace, Ethan A. Farmer, Section 26, Percifer Twp. P.O. Knoxville (no biography for any Wallace) Joan
Posted on: Knox Co. Il Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Il/Knox/10995 Surname: Wallace ------------------------- Anyone researching this Wallace family. If so, I would like to compare notes. Ethan Allen Wallace/Phebe Janet Wallace, married August 24, 1841 in Loraine county OH. Ethan was born in VT and Phebe in OH although birth records have not been located for either one of them at this time. Ethan fought in the War of 1812 and for his service was granted a land patent in Knox, County, IL for 160 acres. The family moved there sometime after Jul 1860 and Ethan died Jan 3, 1863 in Galesburgh, IL. So far I have not been able to locate a gravesite for Ethan. In 1878 Phebe started collecting a Widows Pension based on Ethan's military service. A grave hasn't been located for Phebe either but I have a copy of a letter written by the Clerk of the District Court of York County, Nebraska to the U.S. Government Pension office in Washington DC. The clerk states that Phebe died there on Oct 3, 1896 and was without property to pay her final expenses. He was asking that her final pension check be sent to the county to cover her final expenses. How or when Phebe got to Nebraska is unknown at this time. Perhaps one of her children moved there and she went to visit or live with them. The family had 8 children, all born in Ohio Calista Ann Wallace, b August 20, 1842. Married Theophilus Simonton Farquer on September 21, 1865 in Knox County, IL Mary Eliza Wallace, b March 07, 1844. Married Israel William Sturges on October 09, 1867 in Knox County, IL Ethan Allen Wallace, b July 12, 1845. Married Mary L. Biggerstaff on December 18, 1865 in Knox County, IL Martha Elizabeth Wallace, b May 09, 1847. Married John Charles Jacobs on January 01, 1866 in Knox County, IL Rachel O. Wallace, b July 06, 1849. Married Charles Mathews on August 25, 1870 in Knox County, IL Amanda M. Wallace, b July 30, 1855. Married Alexander Cook on January 30, 1879 in Knox County, IL Charles Louis Wallace, b May 1858. I have no further information on Charles Albert Lincoln Wallace, b July 02, 1860. I have no other information on Albert I would also like help in locating a grave for Ethan Allen Wallace which I assume is somewhere in Knox County. He was living in Haw Creek Township when he died so he is probably in a cemetery somewhere around there or around Galesburgh where he died. I also see in the 1878 History of Knox County book has something about an Ethan A. Wallace on page 712. Could someone please tell me what it says about him? Thanks Dave
I too have the Potts family in my line. I believe the name is George Potts. His daughter married an Earl Wisenburg. The daughter is still living here in Illinois. I don't know if this fits in with your line. If it does, let me know. Hi Margaret: All lI have on JOSHUA POTTS is that he was born in 1841 in Ohio. His father was JONATHAN POTTS and mother, MARY (unknown). I have a list of Jonathan's children including Catherine whom you speak of below. And the dates of some of their births. Apparently my JACOB and CHRISTINA POTTS are a different family. I do not have the parents of Jacob, but Lewis, Catherine, Christina and Jonas were his children. I would appreciate it if you happen to find out anything more about JACOB POTTS, or any of his children (above). I have EDITH HALL married to LEROY WATKINS. and a few other Halls from the London Mills and Chestnut Township areas. Not much but some names. The two cemeteries in Hermon are across the road from each other. I think the one on the east side is called the Christian Church Cemetery, so the Methodist must be the one on the west side. Happy Searching. - Marna - ----- Original Message ----- From: "K & M Jenstad" <jenstad@pro-ns.net> To: <ILKNOX-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, May 01, 2001 6:52 PM Subject: Re: [ILKNOX-L] Potts > Marna, I also have very little on the POTTs line. Marna, I also have very little on the POTTs line. Elizabeth POTTS, the first wife of my gg-grandfather, David E. HALL, died in 1858 (mother of 13), and is buried in the Methodist Cemetery in Hermon. Then he remarried to Ann DAVIS BARNARD (widow), and had one more child, my great-grandfather. So I am not really related to the POTTS line. The little I have is from a person listed on the Portage Co. OH site, who lists a Joshua POTTS, prob. born about 1790 (calc. from his first child b. 1809), and my David HALL's wife, Elizabeth, was one of his children. I have noticed several POTTS also settling in Knox Co. IL, but don't know how (or if) they are related. In the 1850 census of Chestnut Twp. I find my David E. HALL and Elizabeth POTTS HALL family.....and right next door is Catharine POTTS, age 52, head of family, with several younger people. A Jonathan and Mary POTTS family is a few more houses away. I don't know who any of these people are. Then in London Mills, Fulton Co.IL is Lewis POTTS, who married Emily Bodwell, a native of Portage Co., OH. Don't know who these people are either, but figured if they came from Portage Co. OH they must be related to "my" Elizabeth. So, the answer is that I'm not really following the POTTS line, but would be interested if there is a connection to my David HALL's wife, Elizabeth POTTS. Otherwise, I don't really need other POTTS data. Thank you for offering. You did not say whether you had info or were interested in the POTTS line. I do not have a lot, but found JOSHUA POTTS in my files, and his father. Also some siblings, I believe. I will not post here at this time as I do not know whether you are interested in them or not. I have been trying to locate information on JACOB POTTS; his daughter CHRISTINA married my g. grandfather, ISAAC MILLS and both are buried in the Christian Cemetery in Hermon, so the families must be related. If anyone can help on any information on that family, I would be greatly interested. - and will share what I have. - Marna - ----- Original Message ----- From: "K & M Jenstad" <jenstad@pro-ns.net> To: <ILKNOX-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, April 27, 2001 9:53 AM Subject: Re: [ILKNOX-L] Thurmans from Ohio? > Hi, Susan. No, I've been trying to get a hold of one for some time but they are out of print. I think the library has a waiting list if any should become available. They are talking about revising it. There is one at the Knoxville Library that you can look at. ----- Original Message ----- From: <Shscvi@aol.com> To: <ILKNOX-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, April 29, 2001 3:12 PM Subject: [ILKNOX-L] Knoxville Through Five Generations > Are there any of those books still available? I would like to inquire of the county list coordinator about the possibility of including a link somewhere on your website to our website. My email address is bwebb9@juno.com Thanks so much. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Bob Miller" <Bob_Miller@rdmiller.com> : Ebay is auctioning a genealogy of the Andrew and Janet (McClymont) McCornack Thanks Bob...This is my family written by a cousin.. Till later, Patti In Central IL garyandpatti@gallatinriver.net ~~ I trace my family history so I know who to blame! ~~
Ebay is auctioning a genealogy of the Andrew and Janet (McClymont) McCornack Family of Knox County at http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=584338672. It is described as: "(Author not named), The Andrew McCornack Family of Knox County, Illinois. 2nd edition 1984, 276pp. Softcover. This is a hard to find genealogy. Details are given of the descendants of Andrew and Janet (McClymont) McCornack. Their children married into families of McDowell, Anderson, Tait, Kelly, Miller, and Thompson. In the next generation there were included families of Scott, Brown, Whannel, and Wilson. Additional related families are Carruthers, Cook, Doak, Elsworth, Fletcher, Galt, Goff, Gordon, McKie, Milroy, Moseley, Nichols, Potwine, Sornberger, Stoughton, Walden and Wright. The cover has wear and some discoloration on it and an old label is stuck on it. There was an earlier work referred to as a 1st edition (1977) called McCornack and related families and mentions Knox and Kane Counties." I hope this if of interest to someone. Bob Miller

Il Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Il/Knox/10993 Surname: ------------------------- You might try looking for a book called "KNOXVILLE THROUGH FIVE GENERATIONS published for the sesquicentennial in 1981. There is a copy at the Knoxville City Library. There are pictures of this school in the book. Also, there is information at the Galesburg Library on this school. I believe the school is still standing and is located out by the Knoxville Cemetery.
Thank you, Margaret. I thought there might be a connection to Richard Hall who lived in Washington County, PA (his father was Henry Hall) and was a Rev War soldier. He married Phoebe Beadle Fletcher while in Ohio (Hamilton County) and they had a son Richard who left Ohio for Illinois and then disappeared. He would have been born late 1790's or early 1800's. Since descendants of Phoebe's and her first husband, John Fletcher, ended up in Knox and Peoria Counties, I thought there might be a possibility that they and Richard Hall went to the same area. My ancestors from Yates City, Knox County were quakers. Their surname was Van Syckle. Jodi
Hello, Please let me toss out another bit of trivia for you to factor in. The main stage coach road from Pittsburgh to Cleveland ran through Portage County, OH. It was the early version of Ohio State Route 14. The last stop going from Pittsburgh to Cleveland before entering Portage County was Salem, OH. I can't reference a time frame of the Quaker (Society of Friends) community in the Salem area but I am sure that it existed. I also can't tell you what county the community was in. Salem is in Columbiana County but much of it is in a niche carved from Mahoning County. By the way, the High School nickname in Salem is "The Quakers". Good luck with your search. --Jack Trauth
Thanks, Rex. I knew it was 1886 or something like that. My memory isn't as good as it used to be!!!
