Hi Barb, Abraham W. Meeks and Martha E. Bomar Meeks also had a daughter named Olive C. Meeks who was born 01 April 1856 and died 12 February 1924 (both in Knoxville, IL). She married Charles W. Huggins in Knox Co. on 30 January 1883. I have been researching the Huggins family for several years and will be happy to share my information if you are interested. Sydney

Jan, There is no index in the book. I looked through it but did not run across any of the names you are looking for. Were these names in Knoxville? I have a copy of the Knoxville cemetery and can do look ups for your there. I will keep my eyes open for those names. Regarding Brown's Business College, does anyone know if there are existing lists of graduates of this school? It sounds very much like a school my grandmother would have attended in the late 1890's. She became a bookkeeper and worked at a bicycle company in that capacity after moving to Chicago. Would the Knox College Library have any information on graduates? Joyce L. Steffel Chicago, IL

Hi Your help with the Brown Business Colledge is greatly appreciated. My aunt told me that my mother went there in the mid 1920s. She passed away in 1986. Thanks agail Gail
I don't know the exact years that Brown's Business College operated, but my father went there in 1910, and I went there in 1940, and it operated for some years after that. And I believe that John Cox was the president for both of us. - Marna - ----- Original Message ----- From: <Genniebones@aol.com> To: <ILKNOX-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, May 02, 2001 5:27 PM Subject: [ILKNOX-L] Brown Business College > Hi, > Does anyone know where Brown Business College was located in Knox County > and what was the time frame that it was in business. > Thanks for any help that might be given > Gail > Genniebones@aol.com > >
----- Original Message ----- From: <Genniebones@aol.com> ] Brown Business College : Hi, : Does anyone know where Brown Business College was located in Knox County : and what was the time frame that it was in business. The building is still in downtown Galesburg, corner of S. Cherry and E. Simmons Here is a picture. http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilknox/postcards/schools.htm My grandmother went there I believe.. Here is what the page says about it. "Galesburg, Ills., Brown's Business College, Commercial Block" postcard from circa 1908. [Postcard and text contributed by Bob Miller.] Taken from Portrait and Biographical Album of Knox County, Biographical Publishing Company, Chicago, 1886, page 1021. "Western Business College. Something over twenty years ago this College was established by H. E. Hayes and J. B. Marsh. It was first located in the upper story of the Colton Block. It changed hands several times, when, in 1873, J. M. Martin became the proprietor and removed the institution to the third floor of the Allen Black, corner of Prairie and Simmons streets, where it is still located. Ill health compelled Mr. Martin to retire from the arduous labors of the College, and, March 17, 1883, M. H. Barringer became the proprietor and still holds this position. A through system of bookkeeping is taught at this college, under the practical and business-like principles. Naturally accompanying this course are arithmetic, penmanship and commercial law. There are taught here also telegraphy and short-hand. Mr. Barringer has improved the system of teaching bookkeeping very much. The business transactions that enter into the course of instruction are not imaginary, but real deals. The department of correspondence is also of the same character, and is extended to numbers of other colleges in Chicago, New York and elsewhere. Under Mr. Barringer's management, this college has become a very popular place to secure a business education. The average attendance during the past season was 125. M. H. Barringer, Principal; Jennie E. Benedict and Winona Edgerton, Assistants; George W. Thompson, Lecturer of Commercial Law."

She graduated from GHS in 1936, so I would assume shortly thereafter. Seems as though I remember seeing a sign for it in the 1950s as being located on the upper floors of the building on the southeast corner of Cherry and Simmons Streets, just down the block from the old City Hall. It certainly could have been located elsewhere earlier, though. Tom Lundeen
