    3. Patti: Your Salvadore Ryan was here in Knox county and married to Margaretta Erickson in 1876. They appear in the 1880 census with two children and her father, John Erickson. They are buried in St. Joseph's Cemetery, also Genevieve Ryan Freeman. I can furnish 1880 and 1900 census and death records. Marriage records are $5.00 until 1915 and death records after 1915 are $10.00 Minimum search fee is $15/hr plus cost of court copies. Let me know if I can help further. 1. [ILKNOX-L] Jayhawkers - Death Valley in '49
    2. Pat Thomas
    3. >From the Stark County news, Friday, 1 February 1901 "The Jayhawkers," a party of gold seekers from this section of Illinois, who came together in Galesburg in 1849 and started overland for the gold fields of California, will soon hold a reunion in San Jose, California. The late John W. Plummer, of Toulon, father of Mrs. James Nowland was one of the original party. During the last few years of his life he was never so happy as when telling of the adventures that befell the party in their memorable trip across the plains, and during the few years he spent in the gold fields. To Salt Lake, Utah, the trip was made without adventure, except those that befell all travelers in those early days. There, against the advice of all trained mountaineers and scouts, they decided to make a short cut across Death Valley, a route that General Fremont and the best scouts he could find, including Kit Carson, had tried and had to abandon. For more than a month, the party wandered, half starved and suffering from thirst. For weeks they lived on the raw flesh and blood of their cattle. For days they were wholly witout food or water, and while on the point of starvation the few survivors of the band emerged into the green fields of an old Spanish mission in California and were saved. It was one of the most remarkable adventures of the early days in the West. The survivors have been meeting in a reunion for several years on February 4, the anniversary of the day they emerged from the parched dessert to the green fields and running streams of the old mission. There are only eight survivors of the party left and it is expected that six of them will be present at the reunion. 3. All: I am attempting again to forward info about the WPA in Galesburg in 1937: the following two messages are what I attempted to send Marilyn, but got back as undeliverable - hope I am more successful this time. Msg. No. 1: Hi Marilyn: I lived in Galesburg in 1937, but did not remember specifically what the WPA did there. So, I wrote to some of my classmates, and have received answers that they refurbished many sidewalks and streets in the city. They may have done other things to improve the area, and if I get further information I'll forward it to you. The only name on your list that I recognized was HIGGINS. I was acquainted with a Lloyd Higgins family including: parents, Lloyd and Grace, children, Jane, Betty and I believe Philip. They were friends of my parents. One of my classmates said he knew an Eddie Stoneking, and a Grace Parsons, but I don't think he remembered much about them. Following is an except that I got from one classmate: "The Works Progress Administration was a F.D. Roosevelt program in mid thirties which put unemployed people to work. Work consisted of improving areas of a locality. i.e. Many of the brick sidewalks of Galesburg were refurbished through this program. WPA workers were used to redo parks also. Many improvements to Starved Rock Park were accomplished by these people who were otherwise unable to find employment. I do not recall when program ended. It probably expired as employment opportunities improved." I hope this helps. Msg. No. 2: The WPA covered Cedar creak and on top they built the storm drainage system also they built the sewage treatment plant.Instead of covering cedar creek I should say it was enclosed to drain sewage to the treatment plant. My dad also worked on some of it.On the end of a shovel. Am sure their is much info some place in Galesburg on the project.Use to be a saying we are a two College town but we have a open sewer line. All Galesburg's sewage drained into Cedar Creek Good luck, - Marna -

    3. This is from a Hurlburt list but I will forward what I have to Knox in case it might help someone else. I research Hurlbutt in Knox County and don't think my line used the -urt ending although we all converge further back. Quoted (in small part) from the Hurlburt list (Hurlburt-D-request@rootsweb.com) or use L for non-digest form: Children of Alvah Hulbert and Eleanor Richards are: 10 i. James10 Hurlburt, born 1838 in Ohio. + 11 ii. Lyman Benjamin Hurlburt, born 1841 in Maquon, Illinois ( Knox County ); died Abt. 1929 in Jefferson County, Illinois. 12 iii. Olive C. Hurlburt, born 1843 in Illinois. She married William Brunt in Knox County, Illinois. 13 iv. Lurana Hurlburt, born 1846 in Illinois. 14 v. Isabella Hurlburt, born 1848 in Illinois. I picked up you family when I was going over the Knox Census at the family history center a couple years ago and jotted them down just in case. Here is what I copied (you probably already found this). Notes are a little old and I worked fast so I hope I got it right: 1860 Salem Twp (Knox County): 623601 A. Hurlburt 48 OH Elenor (?) 22 OH Lyman 17 Lab Lorana (?) 14F Isabella 12 Elmer 6 That's all I have. Presume you have gone to the massive Hurlburt/Hurlbutt/Hurlbut/many variations website at: http://www.idsonline.com/hurlburt/ You can ususally tie into your line at the site if you can work back far enough.
