Hi Listmembers, My GGGrandparents, Adam and Nancy (Curry) Brooks came to Knox Co in Nov, 1858 and lived a short time with William and Mary (Nancy's sister) Anderson. Their daughter Martha Jane married John M Stephens Dec 13th 1864. I have much on the Stephens side of the family but I am trying to solve some problems. I was wondering if someone in the Anderson or Curry families might have some new information about the Brooks and Stephens families. I know this is a real stretch, but you never know. I am looking for the grave of John Milton Stephens' father Levi. He died in 1852 in Stark Co. John was 14 at the time. I have checked for his grave in the Lafayette cemetery but the records are real scarce. I know he married a Rosanna Dunbar and they had a son who died at or shortly after childbirth along with the mother. I am also looking for information on Adam Brooks' parents William and Betsy and Adam's sister Jane. Thanks for any help. Steve P

Can anyone tell me how I can find out if my ancestor is buried in Yates City? The story that has been handed down in my family says that John M. JORDAN served in the Civil War and survived without causality. However, en route home he reportedly was throwing stones from the flatbed of a moving train and was killed. He was mustered out of the service in 1865 and his residence is listed as Salem Township. I found my JORDAN living in Yates City on the 1860 census, but by the 1870 census the family had "grown up" and the household changed. I live in California and don't know when, if ever, I will have the change to visit the Yates City area. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated. John Seymour
Sorry, there are no Jordan's listed in Salem, Maquon, Elba, or Haw Creek Township cemetaries. John: E. B. Jordon lived on section 12 in Salem township about 1870 according to the 1870 Atlas of Knox County. This borders on Peoria County and a possibility would be that your John M. Jordan is buried in Elmwood which is about 6 miles from Yates City. Another possibility would be in Fairview Cemetery, Fairview township in Fulton county. I do not find a gravestone listing for him in "Salem township Cemeteries" Knox County. Ruth B. This is for Ruth Ragsdale who is on this list: I have this "abstract" from a newspaper article and I wondered if you could e-mail me and tell me whether you might be able to obtain a copy of the original article. I would love to have a copy. >From the Galesburg Republican Register, Page 12, Saturday, April 20, 1879: Henderson, Illinois. The following information on maps showing cemeteries is from Ancestry Daily News, 16 May 2001, which brings you "Your Daily Dose of Genealogy." This is a free newsletter from Ancestry.com, and anyone can sign up and receive it at no charge. I find much that is useful in their newsletter. J. Kuck MAPS SHOWING CEMETERIES When I go into a courthouse I go into the Tax Assessor's office and purchase a DOT map of the county. I then take a red ink pen and circle the cemetery signs on the entire map, so when I am able to visit an area where I know my ancestors lived, I can follow the rural roads directly to the cemeteries that I want to search. I know from experience that in GA those maps I purchased in 1970s had the cemeteries identified, but a more recent one for Bibb Co., GA does not show the cemetery symbol. I wish that they would continue these markings on the maps for those of us trying to locate our loved ones so long ago passed on before us. Naomi Buckner Editor's Note: The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Geographic Names Information System can be searched for cemeteries by county. Just pick a state, enter the county, and under "Feature Type" choose "cemetery" at: http://geonames.usgs.gov/pls/gnis/web_query.gnis_web_query_form The list of cemeteries in the database shows the town or city that each cemetery is located in, and by clicking on a particular cemetery, you can get the exact location. Maps, and sometimes aerial photographs, can also be brought up and zoomed in on.
