Many of the older people referred to DeGrummond's Mill when I was growing up. What do you have on the ancestry of Mary Ann Corbin? I am working on a Persifer Township history and would like to include as much as possible about the Corbin and DeGrummond families. Please feel free to contact me. Rex Cherrington Here's the passage from Chapman's history.. Pp. 669-70 DeGrummond, J.J., son of Wm. J. and Julia Ann DeGrummond; was born at Reading, Pa., Jan 4, 1838. He was educated in the common schools: his early life was passed as a painter and cabin boy on steamboat on Lake Erie; learned the trades of painter and miller, and was a clerk in a store, but changed his business to that of grocery and dry goods merchant, and has been very successful. Was married Aug. 21, 1868, to Mary Ann Corbin; they are the parents of one adopted son; he has travelled through Pennsylvania and Canada, and finally removed to Knox County; was in service during the Kansas troubles in 1856; served in Co. C, 47th Reg. Ill. Vol. in the rebellion; was taken prisoner in Mississippi and confined four months in prison at Macon, Ga. He is a member of the Congregational Church. Republican. P. O., Knoxville. I recently found a website -Illinois Trails, that lists all counties and tells which records are available and how far back. Some are even online but not Knox. This is no problem for me because I live just 15 miles from Galesburg in Henry Co. So I guess it's time for me to visit the courthouse. I've discovered a lot of info within the last week. Was able to confirm that the Brennan/Madden grave in St Joseph's are the parents of Maggie Brennan, 2nd wife of Salvadore Ryan. (Margretta Erickson was his first wife, d.1898) Salvadore's parents were Adam H. Ryan b.Kentucky and Nancy Aldredge b.in Mt Vernon, Indiana. But have hit that brick wall after finding names of GRGRGrandparents. Hopefully if death records on them were filed they might list their parents. Nancy Ryan died in Knox Co also. Adam is buried in Missouri. Thanks again for your responses.

    2. Hi, I recently wrote the following note: For an excellent description of how land was distributed in the United States,  check out the article History & Use of Land Records by Linda Haas Davenport. She gives an excellent description of how our ancestors staked their claims. You can view the entire article online at: http://www.obcgs.com/searchland-rec.htm Hope this helps!              Diane S. ================================================ I subsequently received a nice note from Linda Haas saying she was unaware that anyone had posted one of her essays on a website. She is contacting the website and requesting that they remove it. She asked me to let the Knox County listers know that they are all welcome to view the same information and more at her website: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~haas/learningcenter.html She has many helpful articles regarding genealogy research. Enjoy! Diane S.

    3. Posted on: Knox Co. Il Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Il/Knox/11028 Surname: ENNIS, GATES, KITLINGER, LOOMIS, BERFIELD ------------------------- Hi Karen, I would like to get your information too. I never got a response to my original query from Knox County, but when/if I do, I'll share what I get there. For now, here's what I have: Maria A. Berfield married Jacob Kitlinger. One of their children was Sarah Elizabeth Kitlinger (my source was family contact, but is consistent with a posting on the Knox Co Query Forum that said Sarah lived in Yates City, Elba Township, Knox Co, IL. They spelled her name Kightlinger). I have her birth as 26 Aug 1831 in Crawford Co., PA; and her death as 1 Sep 1905 in Oketo, Kansas. She married Rueben M. Gates 10 Aug 1850, at Elba Township, Knox Co., Illinois. (I'm sorry I can't recall the source. I'm not an expert at this and am just learning the hard way). I can tell you I don't have any vital records to substatiate it, but only oral family history). They had a son, Frank E. Gates. His marriage license indicates he was 27 years old at the time of his marriage, which would make his DOB about 1871. He was born in Yates, Knox, IL. His parents are named on the marriage license. He married "Bessie" Ennis (AKA: Sarah Elizabeth Ennis; easy to see why she went by Bessie with all the Sarah Elizabeths), 16 Aug 1898 at Yates, Knox, IL. She was 22 at the time which means she was born in 1875 or 1876. She was also born in Yates, KNox, IL. Her parents were J. Ennis and Susan Bishop. It was a first marriage for both Frank and Bessie. They had a daughter Fern Irene Gates (don't know how may sibs she had) born 21 Jan 1901, in IL (probably Yates). I knew Fern before she died 13 Mar 1985, in Torrance, CA. She was (is) a very sweet lady, lots of fun and quite musically gifted. On 19 Aug 1924 in Hill City, Kansas -- she married William Wesley McCann. He was b. 29 Jun 1899 in Pigeon, Roane, WV. They had four children, one of which is my husband's father. Since you have both KITLINGER AND GATES, you must also descend from Frank E. Gates. Let me know if you would like a copy of Frank and Bessie's marriage license. I can email an electronic copy. I am very eager to hear if you have anything to add. No small fact or family story is uninteresting to me. Lisa

    1. [ILKNOX-L] REDLINGSHAFER
    2. I found that Emma REDLINGSHAFER is listed in the SSDI as having died in Knox Co., IL. I am trying to tie in the Illinois REDLINGSHAFER family to the rest of the group in our family. George and Dorothea REDLINGSHAFER emigrated in 1848 from Bavaria and lived with George's daughter, Barbara REDLINGSHAFER FISCHER, in Pennsylvania. Barbara had at least two brothers, James and John Casper, who were also in Pennsylvania at that time. George's other children, Barbara's steps, corresponded with Barbara for quite some time, but I can't get any definite proof of where the children of James and John may have gone. Two of George's daughters married Banschbach brothers and settled in Tazewell Co., IL. I know there are other REDLINGSHAFERS in northern Illinois but haven't been able to get any information from the current group about their forebears. If you are from the present-day descendants or know of them, I will gladly share photos and information! All help is appreciated. My dad is still living and I would like to give him some more information before he passes on -- at 85, that could be at any time. Hoping for results or information -- Donnell Redlingshafer Wisniewski

    1. [ILKNOX-L] Pioneers to Knox Co
    2. Todd Walter
    3. I was thinking the other day about this and am wondering how the pioneers knew where to find their land or how they knew it wasn't already owned by someone else if they found some they liked. I know that the county was surveyed in 1810's. Were all quarter sections marked in some way? With the land office being in Quincy, it would seem that the first settlers would have had a very long wait for someone to come out and tell them if the property was available, and would assume that was after they went there. Were maps or plats available somewhere along the way, but with no roads how would they use them. When you consider this area was nothing but prairie and timber with few landmarks it must have been very frustrating, although I suppose they had vastly greater patience than we do today, but with most of them arriving in the fall it would seem they'd be in a hurry to put up a cabin and possibly start clearing timber for spring planting since the earliest settlers thought the prairie useless and almost impossible to till with the implements they had at that time. Just wondering. Todd in Maquon
