For the easiest and best history lesson. The following site shows in movie format the migration patterns, territory openings and other factors that influenced the migrations of our ancestors. http://www.animatedatlas.com/movie.html
In the early time frame of 1859-1862 people were coming to Kansas for several reason. Land was a major one. Kansas Territory was just opening up so that people could acquire land beginning in the mid-1850's. Also, there was a great influx of people who came prior to Kansas statehood in 1861 because Kansas was the state that was going to 'unbalance' the number of states north and south of the Mason-Dixon line. Both the north and the south wanted Kansas to go with their side of the slavery issue. This was the time that Kansas gained it's name as Bloody Kansas. I live in Lyon County (it was Breckinridge County at the time your family was there). There were definitely believers both way, that resulted in killings within the county. Also, my husbands family came into that same area in the late 1850's. They were Quakers and they were moving to Kansas for the war issue, but also to operate missions for the Indians, and for land. I hope this will help explain the reasons for people going to Kansas. g2

William was unfortunately mortally injured in a steam boiler explosion and the family moved back to Maquon to live with Emily's parents, Joel & Sarah Nichols. William died several years later, in 1865. Wonder what the attraction in Lyon Co., KS was for those Knox county people?

Donna, Thank you so much for the good information. I think it is very possible that Thomas Lufkin was Paul's uncle (the younger brother of Paul's mother Lucy.) Thomas Lufkin, sister Lucy, two other siblings (Sarah & Sophia), and their parents (Stephen & Lucinde), are enumerated in the 1880 census for the 1st Ward of Joliet, Will Co. Thomas' birth date of 1860 from the cemetery marker coincides exactly with his age calculated from the census. I will continue to try to find Ralph and Lucy Tyler's dates of death and the location of their burial. Given the fact that you say that there are several Lufkin names buried in the cemetery, I can't help but be a little encouraged and wonder if there aren't other family members buried nearby. Are you aware of a contact such as the Knoxville cemetery's caretaker or administrative body, or another organization where I could obtain a list of interments? Thanks again for your help. I also have Swedish ancestors who were in Galesburg. About all I know are their names: Sven A. Miller m. Lucretia Bergeson (d. 1880). They were the parents of Mary Louisa Cornelia Miller, b. 29 Jul 1865, in Galesburg. Mary Louisa ended up in Kansas at some point in her life. I don't know about Sven & Lucretia. I think Sven may have run a grocery or general store of some sort there in Galesburg, but I'm not sure. Good luck on your trip.
We went to Galesburg last summer to check out records and surrounding area cemeteries. The people working at the "Visitors Center" were just great. Gave us maps and good directions to the small towns we were also looking for.
The library has a good geneology section. Public records are at the court house, which is near the library. Places to search would include: The Galesburg Public Library Knox County Public Records There is also a Swedish Cemetery in Knoxville, about 5 miles south of Galesburg. I've only been there once and it is in a rural-residential area of this very small town. Your best bet would be to stop at one of the stores and ask directions. It is a small cemetery that sits back from the road on your left hand side, but it is easy to miss. It is well maintained.
