This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/4g.2ADE/1756.4 Message Board Post: Hi, I was going to answer your question too and see others have. I go there quite a bit for myself and for others. You can look in the Big Volume Books at the Courthouse in the Clerk's Office but in order to look at the document you want in question you can't look at it unless you pay the $5.00 which is NOT a certified copy they cost more. Your $5.00 is getting you a copy of the death, birth, marriage, etc. certificate for genealogy purposes only and they mark them that way also. I have tried to look at them but only once got to without having to by one. The older ones don't have as much information on them as the later ones. Right off the top of my head I can't come up with the date when they have the returns on the marriages. But there is a cutoff date for it. And Pat is right about how they treat you in there. If you get the little blonde who I should remember her name but I don't not good with names she is pretty good about helping and doing things for you. The! others are not. I've been there and had them all. The new clerk we have now at the office when I went back the same day for somebody else to see about the maiden name of a female lady in question for her. copied two documents and let me look at them and then since I didn't get the information I wanted on them he told me I'd spent enough money earlier that morning on records. I thanked him very graciously. First time that had ever happened to me in the Knox County office. I also do research in Warren County, IL and when you get copies for genealogy purposes they are only 50 cents a copy. Don't know why the two counties have the big difference in the prices. But it's there. I generally visist the library in Galesburg first on account of they have such a fantastic genealogical reference area there if I don't really need the certificate I don't go get one on account of the cost and it can run into money. Plus, if you send in from out of State is costs more and if th! ey don't have the record they keep your money for looking it up.Plus, I believe they charge extra for it.n A handling charge or something like that they call it. Used to be when I started this many moons ago it wasn't so expensive and even the Ancestory.com and places of that sort were free. Now they all cost you money when they got most of their information from people posting their information on their sites in the beginning. I really didn't care for that and will not subscribe to any ot them. Well, have a fine day. I hope we do here in knox county and hope the rain and storms will go away. Probably no help, but there was a Harriet Hunter in Knox College, Galesburg, IL in 1937 and 1938. I do not know where she was from, but she married Kenneth Munson. I might be able to find a bit more on them if you think this is a lead. Sorry, I don't know where she was from at this time. - Marna - ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, May 24, 2004 10:52 PM Subject: [ILKNOX-L] Charles Edgar Hunter > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Classification: Query > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/4g.2ADE/1758 > > Message Board Post: > > My greatgrandfather was born in St Augustine, Knox Co July 20, 1859. Tyson, I checked Iowa state census for 1885. Your McCoy family has now moved to Wright Co, Iowa, living on section 14 of Blaine township. There is another son born, John, b. abt 1881 in Illinois. 1910 census for Wright co shows Adam, Harmon & John McCoy as heads of households, all in Vernon township, all born IL. So I think this is surely your right McCoy family. I know that many courthouses might charge a basic fee when you mail in a search request as oppossed to requesting a specific record you have a name and date for. At any "in person" experience I have had at Knox, there was a charge for the record..... if found. They have let me stand at the counter and browse thru the big death index book. I'm usually after death records when I'm there. And I have seen others mention being able to go thru immigration/naturalization records in another part of the courthouse. I've noticed the staff at Knox does seem to be unpredictable in their helpfulness towards genealogy. Sometimes they seem bothered, other times not. It does help if you have specific names and a date range to work with. What type of records were you trying to find?

I have all dates of birth and death dates of he and Mary Tamsel Condra's children (10 total). I have his marriage date to Mary (6 Dec 1876) and his death date (25 feb 1921). He died while on a trip to Idaho to visit his son (my great-grandfather) Aaron Milton Thompson (who is named after Mary's brother, Aaron Milton Condra). I found John and Mary, with two young children, Eva and Mead in the 1880 Oregon census (Linn County, Brush Creek Precint) but no other census since. I have John W, death certificate (copy), which lists his mother and father's name as "unknown". I have a dead end from there, as far as trying to figure out who his parents were. Any information you have about that would be very helpful to me. IN the 1880 census he lists his parents as being born in New York, but I can't find him in the 1850 census (when he would have been 4, with his family). Of course, on the 1880 Census he lists his birth place as! Kentucky, so that is where I've been looking, perhaps I will try the state of Illinios. There is a family rumor that he possibly changed his last name to Thompson, due to fleeing the civil war. I found the pedigree of Mary Tamsel on this site. I downloaded the GedCom file on the Condra line, it was posted by an Eininger.
