The Illinois State Archives was sending out free death certificates until 15 Nov 2002, at which time they stopped the service as they were about 19,000 requests behind. As of 10 Jan 2003, they still had 17,855 requests to fill and were working on requests that had come in the first week in June, 2002. I would think that it will be almost 6 months until they get to the August requests, as there are only 3 Archives staff members who do these requests and 2 of those staff members were just hired to replace employees who took early retirement the end of 2002. Now the only ways to get death certificates from the State of Illinois is to either go to the Illinois State Archives in person or send a $10.00 non-refundable search fee to the Illinois Department of Public Health. If you are too far from Springfield to go there yourself, I have offered my services to get death certificates that anyone on the list may need.
