    3. Listers, Does anyone know if records from the old West Side School exist? The name changed to Central School and then to McWayne. The building was torn down in the early 1960s. I'm looking for information on students who attended this school in 1900. Just another limb, Laura search for fallen leaves at http://home.attbi.com/~branchingout

    3. Hi Susanne, I was hoping for remembrances of a great grandfather and his siblings who attended the school during the period of roughly 1888 to 1900. Report cards, class photos, newspaper articles about the school or happenings therein, things like that. I do have a wonderful photo of the building. There is a marker on the front that says "Public School" and a year, maybe 1867? ----- Original Message ----- From: Susanne Freund To: ILKANE-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Wednesday, April 02, 2003 2:49 PM Subject: Re: [ILKANE] West Side School in Batavia I live in Batavia and live a block away from where that school once stood and am near the library. 3. The building that was once called the West Side High School is still standing. It's an average size limestone building on the corner of First and Lincoln Streets. That building does have a plaque on it, although I'm not sure what the plaque reads. It currently houses an accountants office.......... I can certainly check the date on the plaque for you and check with the library for the other items you listed. Any name(s) in particular you're looking for remembrances on? Contact me at the below e-mail, if you like.........or even phone me. 3. Susanne, I know the building to which you are referring. It's not the same school. I took pictures of that high school during a visit to Illinois a year or so ago because one of my ancestors, Frank Tolf, was the valedictorian of the 1907 graduating class there. The sign out front says something along the lines of the Old School House. The West Side School looked like the Addams family house. Remember that TV show with Gomez and Morticia? It was three stories high with tower-looking things all over the top. Marilyn Robinson of the Batavia Historical Society told me the building was torn down in the sixties. I wish I could be of more help. The picture I have is just the school, there's nothing in the background to identify it's location.
