Hi list: My wife, Christie, is researching the Stringer/Burton connection in Kane County and discovered she had a potential error in her records. She needs someone to go LOOK at the actual Kane County Marriage Records -- NOT the Index on line or the Index in the Registers -- and see what the name says for 2 perhaps 3 marriages of a WILLIAM BURTON. The first marriage was to Sarah L. Pool or Sarah L. Poole, Kane Cert #2352 on 01 January 1855. This marriage is not her problem other than to verify the spelling of Sarah's last name. Is it Pool or is it Poole? It is either of these next two marriages that she has a problem with regarding the Bride's actual name. In the obituary of William Burton at his time of death, it names his second wife to be JANE COOKMAN. In the Marriage Index which is online, it says the name is JANE COOPER. The marriage cert for this one is 4479. She thought she had looked at the films for the Marriage Registers, FHLC #1,481,108 and found the marriage to be to a JANE COOKMAN for the same cert 4479 taking place on 18 Jul 1863 and not to JANE COOPER. She hired a researcher there in Elgin some years ago and the researcher just sent her all the research material on her family and in it the researcher had typed a page on William Burton and listed all three of the wive's names. Now, she believes she may have sent her the information on William and Sarah Poole and William and Jane Cookman (way back in the 1980s when she first started her searches). She used to send the research as much information as she had to that point so the researcher wouldn't duplicate her efforts unless asking for verification of the info. This was to help the researcher do the obits -- which the researcher did based on the information provided as well as came up with others on her own! For the life of my wife, she says, "I must have been deaf, dumb and blind at the time I reviewed the film or at least a bit stupid in the head because I forgot to make an entry into my records about the Marriage between William and Jane Cookman. This is something I always do, but must have written it on a piece of paper and never incorporated it into my records. This was before the days of laptop computers or even computers to haul around or enter when you get home! It was the days of manual paper pushing!" To make a long story short, she would like someone to review either the LDS film number above (she doesn't have access to it any longer) or the actual Marriage Registers, or both, for Kane County to see if anyone can find THREE marriages. Until she got the material from the researcher, she didn't know about Jane Cooper. The census records as far as tracking William and Jane isn't helping her at all. It gives a wife Jane born in East Canada and since she now has two Jane's born really close together, it is impossible to see the difference. Has she got William married to TWO Janes by mistake and it should it only be ONE Jane? Or are there actually two marriages to two different Janes? Maybe she has just gotten the surnames incorrect because she misread the records? Please help straighten her mess out, if you can!! One other quirk in this whole thing besides the obit is the cemetery records! In Udina Cemetery, Sec 12, Plato Twp the following people are listed with the surname Burton: Georgina (1857-1906) Sarah (Pool) 1831-1853) It could be 1863 according to the researcher. == 1st wife Floyd (1886-1890) Willie G. (1967-1880) Mary (1872-1880) Bertie (1875-1876) John F. (1927-1856) Lucy A. Fay (1923-1850) Jane (1796-1864)===She's a Stringer by birth William (1821-1902) Jane Cookman (1833-1892)====???? Should she be Cooper? The tombstone markers say: Row 11 Wm. Burton, Nov 26 1821 - May 6, 1902, his wife Jane Cookman Burton, June 5, 1833 - June 16, 1892 Row 10 MOTHER LUCY JOHN E. BERTIE Burton, Jane Jan 31, 1796 - April 9, 1864 == [aka the Jane Stringer above] Sarah Poole, wife of Wm. Burton, Mar 21, 1831-Mar 27, 1863 Now, as to time periods. Sarah Poole died 1853 or 1863. The second marriage took place 1863 as above. If two Jane's, then the last one died 1892. When did the 3rd marriage take place, if at all. What is the pertinent information the record says, such as age, place of birth, parents, etc. All send all details for that marriage entry, please. Another thought. Is it possible that in the marriage record for the Jane Cooper that she used her "Maiden Name" of Cooper and she was actually a Mrs. Jane Cookman? It just now came to me as I was finishing her request. Can someone check this for her as well? Bob Trapp on behalf of my wife, Christie Trapp. Please reply to her at: [email protected]
