Jane, I charge $3.00 for each death certificate I get (I do not charge for any that I am unable to locate) to cover the fee the Archives charges for copies, postage, and other research expenses. If these charges are OK, send me a reply e-mail and let me know your snail mail address. I should be able to get these 2 death certificates next week on my next trip to the Archives (weather permitting) and will mail them to you as soon as I get them with a "bill" for the $6.00 charge. The Illinois State Archives was sending out free death certificates until 15 Nov 2002, at which time they stopped the service as they were about 19,000 requests behind. As of 10 Jan 2003, they still had 17,855 requests to fill and were working on requests that had come in the first week in June, 2002. I would think that it will be almost 6 months until they get to the August requests, as there are only 3 Archives staff members who do these requests and 2 of those staff members were just hired to replace employees who took early retirement the end of 2002. Now the only ways to get death certificates from the State of Illinois is to either go to the Illinois State Archives in person or send a $10.00 non-refundable search fee to the Illinois Department of Public Health. If you are too far from Springfield to go there yourself, I have offered my services to get death certificates that anyone on the list may need. I am researching my Servatius line who moved from Cook County to Kane County and more specifically Geneva about 1924. I am wondering if anyone can tell me if there were city directories issued from about 1924-1930. It is said my family lived on State Street in those years and I would like to verify if so. They later moved onto Woodlawn about 1930. Thank you for any assistance about the city d's.

Hi, I must have missed that - free death certificates would be wonderful. I volunteer for RAOGK and have several people I'm to get copies for pending. Ricky Harris
I just discovered there is one other option. Look up the death cert on the IL State Archives site, then order the corresponding film from the LDS through your local Family History Center. They have them all filmed. The film rental is just $3.25. Be sure to make note of all the info from the webpage to order the correct film. You can find the right film to order using the LDS on-line catalog at www.familysearch.org Good luck. Does anyone know if the Illinois Genealogy Society is still honoring the request for Free Death certificates it was doing last summer? I sent request in August when they were doing them and still have not received the certificates. Laura
Monica, Upon receipt of a copy of a death certificate from the state of Illinois, the accompanying letter said they included a "Record of Death". The "Record of Death" which they sent, was titled "Standard Certificate of Death". At the Gail Borden Library in Elgin, on microfilm, is the "Record of Deaths, Interments and Permits for Removal; City of Elgin, Kane County, Illinois". This is the city's record and covers from the very early 1900's until as late as 1948. What ever they are, both the Elgin records and the state's death certificate provide a wealth of information - though I know there are exceptions. Along with all the information Gordon listed, these particular records also included: time of death, age, sex, race, marital status, name of spouse, occupation, physician's name, nationality, rank, military company and war. The "Record of Deaths, Interments and Permits for Removal; City of Elgin, Kane County, Illinois", even gave the number of years as an Illinois resident. It did not give the address of the informant. The Certificate of Death did give the address of the informant. I'd recommend checking both whenever available.
