    3. Probably the reason is the same as applied in Aurora. The Fox river runs through the middle of town and there is an East Aurora High and a West Aurora High both of which I attended back a long time ago. I believe the Fox river aso runs through Batavia.

    3. First Laura.... < the 1907 graduation exercises for the East Side school were held in the < Baptist church and the West Siders had their commencement at the < Congregational church. Neither had their own school building. <Why churches though? Makes me wonder if the schools were east and west <because of geography only or was there a religious component involved? This is only a guess from a small-town Illinois girl...but I would think it quite likely that they used the churches because of seating. There would be a "stage" and lots of places for proud families to sit while the ceremony progressed. And, probably, for free or at least very low cost, to the District. Plus, it seems that there was little thought given to "separation of church and state" as far as cooperative spirit was concerned. I didn't graduate until 1959 (far from 1907 and, distressingly, nearly as far from 2003...but I digress...) and we used church buildings upon occasion, and even had some "religious" services in the high school gym. "Small town" may be the key word. I assume that the beginings of the town when they were lucky to have a building that could be used for "all" gatherings (not living and not a saloon) might have still been an influence in 1907. I'll be watching to see if anyone with local (Batavia) information has a more accurate view. Kristy from Plano

    3. Susanne, This is very interesting. And it would certainly explain why the 1907 graduation exercises for the East Side school were held in the Baptist church and the West Siders had their commencement at the Congregational church. Neither had their own school building. Why churches though? Makes me wonder if the schools were east and west because of geography only or was there a religious component involved? But back to my original question...are there any records from the grade school? the first Laura ----- Original Message ----- From: Susanne Freund To: ILKANE-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Thursday, April 03, 2003 10:03 AM Subject: Re: [ILKANE] West Side School in Batavia I've never heard of a Catholic HS in Batavia........ Prior to 1910 there must have been two high schools, not actual high school only buildings, but certain classrooms in a school building comprised of high schoolers - one on the East and one on the West. In 1910-11 both East and West school systems were consolidated into one. I'm assuming that the high school, after consolidation, was housed in the gothic looking building that the "other Laura" is referring to. If I'm reading my Batavia books correctly (I'm flipping between three of them, at the moment), that building was once the old Methodist Church, at 355 First Street, which was bought by the school district and renamed (eventually) McWayne School. This old McWayne School was torn down in 1950 and a new one built on the propery. > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Branching Out" <BranchingOut@attbi.com> > To: <ILKANE-L@rootsweb.com> > Sent: Wednesday, April 02, 2003 3:01 PM > Subject: Re: [ILKANE] West Side School in Batavia > > Hi Susanne, > > > > I was hoping for remembrances of a great grandfather and his siblings who > attended the school during the period of roughly 1888 to 1900. Laura, I'm afraid I don't, but here's an interesting tidbit from the Batavia Herald, May 30, 1907 issue: "The East Side school exercises will occur on the evening of June 6, and will be held in the Baptist church. The graduating class is composed of the following members; Carl Hohenstein, Nellie Averill, Bertha Wright, Erma Jeffrey, Marie Pipping. The West Siders will have their commencement on June 19 at the Cong'l church and the class is composed of the following; Ruth Redborg, Alice Williams, Elsie Hunt, Anna Thelander, Lillian Benson, Nellie Felver, William Davis, Athorton Hobler, Carl More, Brayton Weaver, Frank Tolf, Meridith Mallory, Arthur Hobart." ----- Original Message ----- From: howard/laura To: ILKANE-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Wednesday, April 02, 2003 3:34 PM Subject: Re: [ILKANE] West Side School in Batavia Laura, would you know how they were divided boundary wise? 3. Susanne, I know the building to which you are referring. It's not the same school. I took pictures of that high school during a visit to Illinois a year or so ago because one of my ancestors, Frank Tolf, was the valedictorian of the 1907 graduating class there. The sign out front says something along the lines of the Old School House. The West Side School looked like the Addams family house. Remember that TV show with Gomez and Morticia? It was three stories high with tower-looking things all over the top. Marilyn Robinson of the Batavia Historical Society told me the building was torn down in the sixties. I wish I could be of more help. The picture I have is just the school, there's nothing in the background to identify it's location. Laura The building that was once called the West Side High School is still standing. It's an average size limestone building on the corner of First and Lincoln Streets. That building does have a plaque on it, although I'm not sure what the plaque reads. It currently houses an accountants office..........
