I am looking for the death date of Jeanette CRONK who died between 1870-1875. They lived in Blackberry Twp,Kane Co. Does Kane County have a death index for that time period and where can I find this information? Thank you, Cheryl Idaho
Hi list, Gary, it sounds like an interesting article you came across. I read that IL State census were conducted 1810, '18, '20, '25, '30, '35, '40, '45, '55 & 1865. All listed as limited in both information taken and current accessibility. "The Source" lists mortality schedules taken with federal funds, the last one participated in by IL in 1880. Only a handful of states took one in 1885 which was only partially reimbursed by feds. Most of us know about the 1890 Veterans schedules. Special agricultural, industrial, social and manufacturing schedules vary from state to state, taken mostly 1840-1910, with 1890, 1900 & 1910 being destroyed. Looks like 1880 was last one taken by IL for all, which excluded industry. Some local directories help fill in gaps left by the burned 1890 federal census. A table illustrating microfilmed directories including those close to and of Kane County shows they do not go beyond about 1860. Looks like a case by case search for those. There are some fairly comprehensive (prairie) farmer's directories, but don't recall all of the precise years involved, sans a notation in my source file of one for 1918. Perhaps county officials felt the need to conduct a roll call on the urban population in the decade before the turn of the century. If anyone on the list learns of a surviving Kane County 1893 census, I'd be top of what I'm sure is a long list of folks who'd like to see it. Thanks for sharing your curious find with us, Gary! While researching the 1893 Batavia (IL) Herald, I found an article from September 21, 1893 attributed to the Aurora Beacon that there was a Kane County census in 1893. A table was listed comparing the townships and villages by wards for population increases since the 1890 federal census. I don't see an 1893 state census listed as being available in "Ancestry's Red Book" and was wondering if this might have been just a Kane county only phenomenon. I don't recall ever seeing results of the 1893 census in local libraries, but I may be getting senile (more than an even chance of that!). This link has some hidden treasures including some recognizable Kane County names within images of advertisers in the 1891 Grain Dealers and Shippers Gazetteer; brought to the Net by the same person who did such wonderful work on the 1895 Atlas pages, Pam Rietsch. She even took the time to index the names found in the ads. Thanks Pam! Found a few Kane names listed on the Chicago Board of Trade ad from the Chicago, Northwest R. R. Board link. I'm sure there are others there for folks looking for clues in many areas. Click the link at the bottom: "Forward to Advertiser Directory." The button links to the ad images are to the right of each listed advertiser, so scrolling to the right to find buttons for that column may be necessary. Enjoy... Dear Judy, Thank you for the information about Hammond station. I appreciate it very much. Regards, Pat
Hammond Station is/was in Cook County, Hanover Township, just east of the Kane County line east of Elgin. The area is now gravel quarries/pits. There is a rail line that runs north and south and Hammond Station was a stop on that line at one time. There is some talk about reviving that rail line for commuter service that would eventually service O'Hare Airport. "Mike" Alft, one of our local historians, has written a book about Hanover Township and Hammond Station is mentioned in that book. I also helped a gentleman from Wisconsin with research regarding the Hammond family. Hope this helps a bit. Lola Fermazin Robert Fermazin They lived on State Street. My dad spoke French and German. Would Sacred Heart have any of the old baptism records or did the church burn down a few years ago and all the records destroyed?
