KELLY; My dad grew up with some Dundee Haverkamps. I'll be getting some info on them and Otto Melahn for Chris (are you still out there Chris?). Thanks to all for the helpful advice in my up coming trip to Elgin. Robbie
Billy; There was a Covey family in Crystal Lake, IL in the 1960's. I went to H S with Carlin Covey. Robbie...here are some helpful hints for your research trip to Elgin. Bill Blohm is the Genealogy Librarian at the Gail Borden Library. It would be a good idea to contact him. His schedule varies from week to week. He does work every Tuesday (split shift) morning and then late afternoon til close. The library is open from 9 to 9 M-Thurs, 9-5 (or 6) on Friday andSaturday and closed on Sundays during the summer. The copiers uses $1.00 bills but the microfilm machines use dimes only. There is a color copier that is $ .75. The Elgin Township Probate records are part of the collection at the Elgin Area Historical Society. There is an index to these records on the Elgin Genealogical Society web page. In order to view the records you need to contact the museum director, Liz Marston. Her Email address will be at the end of this note. They charge $.25 for each copy. The museum docents are there to help visitors not researchers, so Liz will either help you herself or arrange for someone familiar with the probates to help you. It's probably not a good idea to just show up and ask to see the records. Be sure to ask Liz what the museum hours are during the summer. If you have any more questions, please do contact me. Happy to help. Judy Van Dusen Elgin EAHS email: [email protected]
Hi Folks: I am looking for a branch of the COVEY family that moved to Illinois. I don't have any idea where so this is probably a shot in the dark They would have migrated from Maryland or Tennessee if that is any help. Robbie Some time ago Kane Co distributed their original Probate Records to repositories around the county. I would image the Gail Borden Library has them for Elgin but if not they will know who does have them They are a gold mine of information Doug Little Florida At 07:00 AM 6/7/2000 -0500, you wrote: >In July I will be going to Elgin for a two day trip which will include >researching genealogy. Robbie, I spent a few hours at the Gail Borden library while visiting in April and found loads of information. Let them know ahead of time and schedule to meet with one of the historians to show you around the research area. I will be definitely going back to continue my research. They are GREAT! In July I will be going to Elgin for a two day trip which will include researching genealogy. Can someone tell me how I can make the best use of my genealogy time while there. I know that the Gail Borden Library is there..is that the best place for research in Elgin/ Thank You Robbie
I understand there is a Historical Society that has records. I have not been able to visit them, but the staff have been very helpful to me by the mail. Check their open hours before going so you can visit them. Susanne
Kelly, Nice to hear from you. I appreciate the information--very interesting. That Mehlan you mentioned: do have more information available? MELAHN is frequently spelled in a variety of forms, perhaps I would be able to recognize the name. Again, thank you for your note, Chris

Chris, Dundee was (and still is to the best of my knowledge) heavily German - Prussian, Neidersachsen and Bavarian. Many of the original settlers' names were still big names in town when I left in 1970. Names include Bruhn, Albrecht, Haertel, Holtz, Mueller or Miller, Nehls, Lemke, Schmidt, etc. My g-g-grandfather Heinrich "Henry" Haverkampf was one of the original village incorporators/trustees from what I can gather from the Dundee history books. He emigrated from Stade, Hannover in 1864. Family stories say there was a big division between the German Lutherans and Methodists in the late 1800s - early 1900s, hence East Dundee and West Dundee. (There were also a lot of Scots) A walk through the two major cemeteries, East and West, seems to support this. Incidentally, my family tree includes a Mehlan by marriage, as well as well as Wachser and Witt (shirttails). Hello list, Does anyone have access to the 1900 or 1910 census index or soundex? I have access to both census, but not the index or soundex. I need a lookup done on the following family: Robert Wilson in Elgin. He would have the following children: Harold, George, Roy and possibly a daughter by 1910. Some of these children would have been born between 1900 and 1910, so they won't all be on the 1900 census. His wife's name was possibly Wilhelmina or Minnie. I would really appreciate any help. I can do the actual lookup on the census, I just need a reference or page number. Thanks! Bobbie
Mon, 5 Jun 2000 09:48:57 -0700 Hi Debbie, I grew up across the street from The First Baptist Church of Batavia and attended there from birth til my marriage (my ancestor, Judge Isaac Wilson [Wilson Street] donated the property for the church). What are your ancestor's names? I have a church history I'd be happy to send you, if you're interested, but don't have a list of the members that far back. I was just back visiting my family last month, and usually attend when I visit. I wish my scanner were working. I would scan you a photo of it. If you're interested in contacting the church secretary re your query, the phone number is 630-879-1558. The present pastor is Richard Watts. There are photos on the wall of all the past pastors and baptismal classes. Let me know if I can help in any other way. Linda Hoover Garrison Vancouver, WA [email protected]
Janet, My Carl Rosenthal is the one you listed the Social Security information for from Cropsey IL. He had been living in the Elgin area when my father, Carl F. Rosenthal, was born in 1947. I do know from old cancelled checks that Carl A. Rosenthal was living in the Algonquin IL area in the middle 60's with his wife Dorothy Ida Van Dusen. I do know many of Carl A.'s brothers and sisters stayed in the Kane County area. I will post a list of them as soon as I get confirmation from my father on a couple of details. Thanks, Mary>:-) ________________________________________________________________ YOU'RE PAYING TOO MUCH FOR THE INTERNET! Juno now offers FREE Internet Access! Try it today - there's no risk! Chris, I honestly don't know if my Rosenthals came from Pommern/ Western Prussia. I don't have much information past what I posted. Family legend has it that Otto Rosenthal emigrated from somewhere in Germany with his parents, and that either he or his father were tailors (nothing confirmed on that though, not even the father's name.) If I do find something out I will let you know. Mary>:-) ________________________________________________________________ YOU'RE PAYING TOO MUCH FOR THE INTERNET! You might try Crystal Lake in McHenry County, IL as there was a Rosenthal Lumber Company. The family were of German Ancestory we think. They may be of some relation. Family lived there for several generations. We are researching the Shales and Crabtrees of McHenry County and several branches of them migrated to Kane and Dupage counties. We find that there were a lot of families who located in these 3 counties.
