Hope someone can help me with this. I have been in touch with the Kane County Court in an effort to find the records for a divorce which occurred in 1913. They are unable to find the record. But I was told that they send copies to one or some of the Historical Societies in Kane County...like Elgin or Elburn...does anyone know if any of the societies have divorce record copies? Would appreciate any information as to who might have them...thanks so much...Patricia Meyers, Worth, IL

Dear Mr. Robert Fay Your message about your research of Rice Fay and your location struck a memory of a letter we have in our collection which is a big mistery to us. The letter is addressed to a Ella J. Allen (later to become Mrs. Ella Ocock one of our ancestors) dated April 29, 1885 and postmarked april 30, 1885 Oxford, Wis. This letter was sent to Ella who was living in Marengo, IL. and reads in part which hopefully strike an intrest. {Letter} The Fay's (I am) the fifth generation from Scotland and Ireland, and the fourth generation from England and the fourth from France. The first Fay that came to this continent (to my knowledge) married a girl by the name of Brigham. These were my fathers great grandfather and great grandmother. My grandfather's name on my mothers side was Phinehas Bemis, my mother's great grandfather's name was Reid who lost his youngest son (Asahel Reid) in the battle of Concord & Lexington (Revolulionary War). Another paragraph reads: My grandfather Fay was Captian Aaron Fay, patroit of the Franch and Indian Wars which commenced in 1756. My grandfather and his brothers (which were old enough) served either in ther French and Indian war or the Revolutionary. Signed by S. D. Fay There is a PS signed Nettie. who wrote this letter for her grandfather. Forgivew me for being so lengthy but we are fasinated by this letter. Here is the puzzle Is Ella J. Allen related to the Fays? If so how? Thank you for your time we wait your reply and hope that ths might be part of your family. David Buck Fairfield, IL [email protected] > From: "Robert W. As I recall there is reference to the Fay Rice property in the American Memories section of the Library of Congress on line. Sorry, I don't have any personal knowledge of the Keatings.

Dear Kane county subscribers, I'm doing a bit of research on Rice Fay, an early settler of St Charles, and need a little help. St Charles is about 1 1/2 hours from my home in southern Wisconsin. Saturday I was in the library, and found numerous mentions of Rice Fay in local histories. In one, the "Historical Encyclopedia of Illinois and History of Kane County", Musell Publishing 1904, Chicago, the statement is made on page 718 regarding St Charles "As early as 1834, the beauty of this location and the evident fertility of its soil attracted Rice Fay, a strong enterprising man who settled and long resided upon Section 3, and subsequently erected the fine, substantial stone dwelling, since occuppied by the Keating family." I believe I also saw something at the library from the 1970's that indicated the Keating home was still standing, but may be mistaken. Is this structure still standing? Where is it? If its not still standing, what became of it? Is there any history to go with the home? If it is still standing, I may well come to St Charles tommorrow, July 4th and take some photos. Any other suggestions on other buildings connected with the Fay family? As a general inquiry, are there any other subscribers interested in Rice Fay and his descendants, or Rices brother Elijah Fay and his descendants on the list or still in the area? ROOT STREET (EAST AURORA) CEMETERY Aurora twp, Kane County, Illinois The Root Street Cemetery, now known as Memorial Park, was the first burial ground in Aurora, Illinois, platted in 1848. Hi list: My wife, Christie, is researching the Stringer/Burton connection in Kane County and discovered she had a potential error in her records. She needs someone to go LOOK at the actual Kane County Marriage Records -- NOT the Index on line or the Index in the Registers -- and see what the name says for 2 perhaps 3 marriages of a WILLIAM BURTON. The first marriage was to Sarah L. Pool or Sarah L. Poole, Kane Cert #2352 on 01 January 1855. This marriage is not her problem other than to verify the spelling of Sarah's last name. Is it Pool or is it Poole? It is either of these next two marriages that she has a problem with regarding the Bride's actual name. In the obituary of William Burton at his time of death, it names his second wife to be JANE COOKMAN. In the Marriage Index which is online, it says the name is JANE COOPER. The marriage cert for this one is 4479. She thought she had looked at the films for the Marriage Registers, FHLC #1,481,108 and found the marriage to be to a JANE COOKMAN for the same cert 4479 taking place on 18 Jul 1863 and not to JANE COOPER. She hired a researcher there in Elgin some years ago and the researcher just sent her all the research material on her family and in it the researcher had typed a page on William Burton and listed all three of the wive's names. Now, she believes she may have sent her the information on William and Sarah Poole and William and Jane Cookman (way back in the 1980s when she first started her searches). She used to send the research as much information as she had to that point so the researcher wouldn't duplicate her efforts unless asking for verification of the info. This was to help the researcher do the obits -- which the researcher did based on the information provided as well as came up with others on her own! For the life of my wife, she says, "I must have been deaf, dumb and blind at the time I reviewed the film or at least a bit stupid in the head because I forgot to make an entry into my records about the Marriage between William and Jane Cookman. This is something I always do, but must have written it on a piece of paper and never incorporated it into my records. This was before the days of laptop computers or even computers to haul around or enter when you get home! It was the days of manual paper pushing!" To make a long story short, she would like someone to review either the LDS film number above (she doesn't have access to it any longer) or the actual Marriage Registers, or both, for Kane County to see if anyone can find THREE marriages. Until she got the material from the researcher, she didn't know about Jane Cooper. The census records as far as tracking William and Jane isn't helping her at all. It gives a wife Jane born in East Canada and since she now has two Jane's born really close together, it is impossible to see the difference. Has she got William married to TWO Janes by mistake and it should it only be ONE Jane? Or are there actually two marriages to two different Janes? Maybe she has just gotten the surnames incorrect because she misread the records? Please help straighten her mess out, if you can!! One other quirk in this whole thing besides the obit is the cemetery records! In Udina Cemetery, Sec 12, Plato Twp the following people are listed with the surname Burton: Georgina (1857-1906) Sarah (Pool) 1831-1853) It could be 1863 according to the researcher. == 1st wife Floyd (1886-1890) Willie G. (1967-1880) Mary (1872-1880) Bertie (1875-1876) John F. (1927-1856) Lucy A. Fay (1923-1850) Jane (1796-1864)===She's a Stringer by birth William (1821-1902) Jane Cookman (1833-1892)====???? Should she be Cooper? The tombstone markers say: Row 11 Wm. Burton, Nov 26 1821 - May 6, 1902, his wife Jane Cookman Burton, June 5, 1833 - June 16, 1892 Row 10 MOTHER LUCY JOHN E. BERTIE Burton, Jane Jan 31, 1796 - April 9, 1864 == [aka the Jane Stringer above] Sarah Poole, wife of Wm. Burton, Mar 21, 1831-Mar 27, 1863 Now, as to time periods. Sarah Poole died 1853 or 1863. The second marriage took place 1863 as above. If two Jane's, then the last one died 1892. When did the 3rd marriage take place, if at all. What is the pertinent information the record says, such as age, place of birth, parents, etc. All send all details for that marriage entry, please. Another thought. Is it possible that in the marriage record for the Jane Cooper that she used her "Maiden Name" of Cooper and she was actually a Mrs. Jane Cookman? It just now came to me as I was finishing her request. Can someone check this for her as well? Bob Trapp on behalf of my wife, Christie Trapp. Please reply to her at: [email protected]

Hello all, My father RYBURN R. UPDIKE, born Nov. 6, 1897 was named after a Mr. RYBURN of an [implement firm?] [real estate business?] in Aurora by the name of "Ryburn, Wolfe and Parker". Does anyone have any information on either the firm itself or the Ryburn family? I am also not certain of the exact spelling of the name of the business, or if the names are in the correct order. The Mr. Ryburn was a friend of my grandfather ABNER G. UPDIKE, who left his family in 1907. I am hoping that maybe a Ryburn descendant might have clues as to what eventually became of Abner; they must have been real close friends for Abner to have named a son after him. Thanks! Dale Updike
Would someone please send me the web site for the Riverside cemetery in Dundee? Thanks much, Grace
Can anyone help me find the records for The First Christian Church? Rev Harry E Alban was the pastor in the 1930's. They were located at 96 E. Wilson St. Batavia. Is anyone else on the list tracking the elusive Anda (a/k/a "Andy") ALEXANDER, wife Susan and several children who moved to IL from VT (possibly via MI)? If so, please contact me. They were in Orange Co., VT, for the 1850 Federal census; in Kane Co., IL, for the 1860 census; and Escambia Co., FL, for the 1870 census.
