    1. [ILKANE] Cemetery book
    2. DEBS
    3. I ordered the Kane county cemetery book that is advertized on the Kane Co. Genealogy site. If anyone needs a surname looked up I'll be glad to do so for you. This is strictly a surname book. It lists the last name, and gives the cemeteries where the names have been found. (No dates, or first names.) It's pretty much just kane county, but a few surrounding areas are listed too. It's great for giving you a starting point, instead of just tying to write every cemetery in the area. Just thought I would offer. debs ....ps...the book was put together in 1986.

    1. [ILKANE] Reading, reading?
    2. Betty Schlichting
    3. Yup, I have, with the surname READING, when I have searched obit indexes, you wouldn't believe how many had 'readings' done by a minister or friend of the family, also many enjoyed reading themselves, so I end up with soooo many that are not my surnames at all. BTW, when I am doing blanket searches like that, I do not know the first names, or the person I am searching for that matter, just an area. Good luck, Betty in North Dakota Searching; Kane County: READING-WOLCOTT-GROTEMEYER-YAGLE-ROTH- HATHAWAY-SCHRODER

    1. Re: [ILKANE] Common surnames
    2. Arthur J. Burch
    3. Hi Bill, I'm not researching the specific names you mention, but here's a trick to use when encountering this problem. For your search subject, type in "your surname" +"another known". For example ... Day +William (note the space). Your search engine will only select places where both words show up. Also, if you're typing in your search subect in all lower case letters, your search engine may be picking up "day" as the common word instead of "Day" as a proper name. Hope this helps. It is of the aftermath of the "cyclone" that struck Elgin on March 28, 1920 -- the Kresge store is visable. Worth a look.

    3. There are two cemeteries on Lake St. One is actually on Villa Street and that is Mt. Hope. The other is Lake Street Memorial Gardens and it is just about across the street from the Villa Olivia Country Club. I have had no experience with Mt. Hope, but the folks at LSMG are less than friendly and not very co-operative. The woman in the office does not want to part with any information via telephone and I'm not sure how she responds to letters. Once, in order to get some information, I resorted to impersonating a person whose relative was buried there. It worked that time, but I doubt that it would work again. After I got the information I needed, one of the groundskeepers took me out to the section and he was as nice as could be. The woman in the office could take a lesson or two from him. All I can say is good luck to anyone who needs information from that cemetery. Judy p.s. who is the FIERKE you are researching?

    1. [ILKANE] Hines family, perhaps in Elgin
    2. The Days
    3. Still looking for information about Thomas Hines, born in February of 1867 in Elgin. The Modern Woodmen of America cam through with a little information. When Thomas joined the Woodmen in September of 1901, he listed his father as 72 years old (so born about 1829,) his brothers ages 42 (@ 1859) and and 38 (@ 1863.) His mother passed away (thyphoid) before September of 1901, also a sister at age 39 (pneumonia) and an infant sister. Does the 1865 State census or 1870 Federal census include a match for this family? Any baptismal records that reach back this far? Thank you! Jean
