    3. Many thanks to Janet Pearson for finding the 1912 marriage details of Paul SETZ and Elizabeth HARTLEY. It was interesting to discover they married in Dickinson, Kansas (where Elizabeth's sister Jeanette HOLDSWORTH lived). Elizabeth was from Pawnee City (b. 1889), but was described as 'of Aurora, Illinois' in her father's and sister's obituaries dated 1922 and 1960. I'm only just beginning to discover sources of information for my US 'cousins' (Elizabeth was my grandfather's cousin). Good of you to point me in the right direction, Janet. Thanks and best wishes Margaret (MLFHS 12748) South Wales [email protected]

    3. My great-grandma (grandma's mother) was a Cassidy, and my other great-grandfather (grandpa's father) used to tease her that she was related to Butch Cassidy. However, I looked him up, one time, and learned that Cassidy wasn't even his real name. I also have a great-great-grandmother who, for a while, I thougth might of run a house of ill-repute. Your right, it always is close, but no cigar. 2. Deb, Here is an article about the Black Sheep Society (yes, there is a genealogical group devoted to "black sheep" in the family"!) http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/1998/Jul-03-Fri-1998/news/7787337.html and at the society's main page, you can read about "black sheep" 'til the cows come home (or should I say, sheep come home)! http://blacksheep.rootsweb.com/1degree.htm It is a wide page, so you will need to scroll right to see the links chart. 3. Hi Jean, I keep my eyes open for Gladys whenever I'm doing a search, or get new index record books. It's rather bizarre but I've kind of adopted her. I feel sorry for her even though I'm not positive I even have her story right. I have the basic facts on date and cause of death for her and her baby. The rest I just read between the lines. My family tree is rather dull....no "scandals" (so far). When I read the personal family histories people put on their sites, there is often something mentioned about a war hero, explorer... some great contributor. I have yet to see anyone list something like.. " My great Uncle was Charles Manson". You know someone, somewhere must have John Wayne Gacy on there tree. Has anyone on this list run into a notorious criminal, or major scandal while looking into your family history? (just wondering) debs

    2. I discovered that my Grandfather was a major piece of ferreting out a murder. He was a postal carrier in Newark Ohio in 1947 when he noticed something unusual about a letter shown him by woman on his route. It had a hand-lettered postmark from Philadelphia, spelled incorrectly. She had created it to demonstrate that her husband had gone to visit Phil. and his "cousin" wrote to say that her husband had died there. In actuality, she had killed him. The whole sordid story was written up in the June 1947 "Official Detective." Gary King

    3. Debs, I would love to see what you find out about Gladys! For me, it's the stories that keep me pressing on with genealogy. We have a g-aunt born in 1877, married in December of 1893. I didn't know she had a daugther until I met some cousins electronically -- and they were sure that her daugther was born in 1896. Within a week I was very sure she was born a bit earlier -- January of 1894, to be exact. Now we all know why great-great-Grandpa wouldn't allow anyone to speak of her...and we are still looking for her daugther's descendents. Poor Gladys! Jean

    3. I have run into a name/person while searching that has no connection to my family, but has sparked my curiosity. I'm not going to spend time digging up info, but if you recognise the name let me know. (yes I am known as being nosey) The persons name is Gladys Goodwin. She died 11/4/1911 at the age of 17 by committing suicide. From other info I stumbled across (all completely by chance) I know she had a baby that died on the same day by strangulation. The babies last name was also listed as Goodwin, the spot for the fathers name was left blank. Given all that I assume she got pregnant out of wedlock, killed the baby, then killed herself. I don't know why this caught my eye, but I would love to know her story and if my hunch is is right. debs

    3. Hello everyone! I'd love to hear of any sightings of MILLS, SETZ or HARTLEY families in Aurora, Kane. I might be able to help you with your Lancashire, Westmorland or Glamorgan research in return! I'm trying to find information about my great-grand-uncle Hamlet HARTLEY and his family. Here's what I know so far: Hamlet HARTLEY b. Westhoughton, Lancashire, UK 1837 married Sarah MILLS (1850-1925) on 24 Mar 1868 in Aurora, Kane, Illinois (according to LDS records). Sarah was also born in England, according to census information. The couple had moved to Pawnee City, Nebraska by June 1870, where they had 12 children, and where Hamlet died in December 1922. His obituary mentions that one of his daughters was Mrs Paul SETZ of Aurora, Illinois. Other evidence suggests that Elizabeth (Lizzie) HARTLEY, b. 1889, lived in Aurora at one time, and it's possible that she was Mrs SETZ. Please get in touch if you have any information about these! Many thanks Margaret (MLFHS 12748) South Wales, UK [email protected]

    1. [ILKANE] Campbell family
    2. Dean Powell
    3. I am interested in a Campbell family that moved to KS around 1868. I have now found evidence that they came to KS from Kane Co., IL. Elizabeth Campbell moved with her sons, John B., William Samuel, Silas, Isaac N. to Labette Co., KS and they were there on the 1870 census. They are in Howard (Elk Co., later that year) KS in the 1875 KS state census. I had hunted for a long time for this Campbell family but there are many Campbell families in the IL census index. I found this item in an old book at our library leading me to Kane Co., IL. This is Isaac Newton Campbell, brother of William Samuel, Silas and John B. Campbell. Grenola, KS History I. N. Campbell, farmer, P. O. Grenola, was born in Kane Co., Ill. in 1850 and was raised there. In 1868 emigrated to Kansas and located in Labette, Co. At the end of two and and one-half years, located in Howard County (my note: Howard Co., KS was made into Elk Co. and Chautaqua Co., KS in 1875, no more Howard Co., KS), and located a claim on Section 36, Town 31, Range 9, then about seventy miles from a railroad. He at once proceeded to make a farm, and has added to the original claim, and now has 720 acres of land, 340 of which is under cultivation. Has the whole place under fence, seven miles of hedge, fifteen acres of orchard, barn 32 x 36, three good houses and plenty of running water, besides several fine springs, timber and everything to be desired on a farm; is very extensively engaged in stock-raising, has 142 head of stock; also buys and ships condiderable stock, and handles a great many hogs. Is one of the best stock men in the county, and has been very successful. Was married in 1876, in Elk County, Kan to Miss E. A. Walworth. Mr. Campbell is a genial gentleman, and very popular in the county. END OF ARTICLE I have ordered the 1860 Kane Co., IL census to see if I can find Elizabeth and her family. I believe that there will be girls also that were probably married before the 1870 census. Marguerette Powell Coffeyville, KS
