    2. I have an original photo of the group, as James Harrison Carter is my gg- grandfather. I have information in my family file on the following Ex-Sheriffs Alexander J. Gray m. Izora Oliver; Mark Whiteaker m. Elizabeth Deaton; Rob Roy Ridenhower m. Alice L. Carter; James Harrison Carter m. 1st Eliza Caldwell, 2nd Amanda Belle Harvick. I know some Hankins desecendants but they don't know all of their line yet. They married into the Carter/Caldwell line. Mara GROUP OF EX SHERIFFS OF JOHNSON COUNTY From The Vienna Democrat, November 9, 1906 Above we produce a likeness of seven Ex-Sheriffs and our present Sheriff. We fell that this is a remarkable group of men, as it presents an unbroken chain of officials since the year 1870, with the exception of the face of Jas. F. Whitehead who was our Sheriff during the years 1894 to 1898, and who failed to come to this reunion on last Saturday, although invited to be present. he now lives in Tunnel Hill, township. A. J. Gray, was born in this county in the year 1843. Was elected Sheriff in 1870 and again in 1872, serving two terms of two years each. He now lives in this city, and has never lived outside the county, and is yet an active citizen. He is one of the boys who wore the blue. Jas. H. Carter, is another native of Johnson county, and was born in 1844.He was elected Sheriff in 1876, also having two terms to his credit. He served his country during the great conflict of �62 to �65, and is now one of the leading business men of our city. Hon. W. C. Allen was born in this city in the year 1844 and was elected Sheriff in 1878 and served two terms of two years each. He now lives in Washington, D. C., but was here recently on a visit to old friends. He also saw service for the preservation of the Union in the sixties. Mark Whiteaker, a citizen of Vienna, was born in 1835. He answered his country�s call during the sixties and served faithfully and well. In 1882, the people of our county elected him Sheriff and he served the county for a term of four years, making a splendid record as a worth official. J. H. Frizzell, present mayor of our city is the only Democrat in this list of ex-Sheriffs. He was born in 1852, and was elected Sheriff in 1886, and served the county for term of four years, making a splendid official. R. R. Ridenhower was born in Goreville Township in the year 1867 and is just now in the zenith of his manhood. He resides on a farm two miles southeast of this city and is prospering. He was elected Sheriff in the year 1890 and served a term of four years. M. A. Hankins, another of the list who saw service during the sixties was born in 1845. He was elected Sheriff in 1898, and served one term. He is now a farmer, owning considerable valuable land in this county, beside has interests in Oklahoma, where his family reside and he divides his time here and there. J. L. Veach our present Sheriff was born on a farm three miles north of this city in the year 1873. He was elected Sheriff four years ago, and has made an efficient officer. He now owns the farm on which he was born, and besides a home in this city where he resides.
