Notes for FRANCES MARION "NED" HUFFMAN: Will proved 23rd day of May, 1966 (I have a copy of FINAL REPORT OF EXECUTOR filed Nov. 22, 1967) Obituary: Vienna Times April 196_ Frances Marion (Ned) Huffman, 79, died 1:00 o'clock Saturday afternoon in the Marion Memorial hospital. Mr. Huffman had been in declining health for the past year. Mr. Huffman had been a resident of Vienna the greater part of his life. He received his early education in Vienna and later, attend the University of Illinois. Mr. Huffman served his country in the Armed Forces during World War I. He experienced service in the European theater of war and participated in some of the major battles of the war. After being honorable discharged from the Army with the rank of Lieutenant, he entered the men's clothing business in Vienna. He was an energetic merchant and his business thrived. He retired from active business life in the year 1936. Following his retirement, he continued to take an active part and interest in civic affairs of the city. His progressiveness and energetic spirit contributed largely to the betterment of Vienna, Johnson county and the country as a whole. Mr. Huffman served the city of Vienna four terms as mayor. It was during his tenure of office that the public square was paved due largely to his influence. The city hall was also built during his term of office. He was a member of the Vienna Township High school board and on the building committee when the gymnasium was built. He was also active and favored the building of the present Methodist church building. This was the type of leadership he rendered, which made him a good and useful citizen. Locally he was a member of the Methodist church and always gave it his support. He was a charter member of the Vienna Kiwanis Club, Harry Sullins Post, American Legion and the Farm Bureau. He was a 50 year member of the Order of Ancient Free and Accepted Masons. Mr. Huffman was the son of George and Mary Ann Jones Huffman. He was born in Simpson, March 23,1887. His father and mother were prominent citizens of Johnson county in the middle nineteenth century. His father also served his country well. In 1863, he enlisted in Company G, 14th Illinois Cavalry under Capt. Williams Prickens in General Sherman's Army and participated in the famous "march to the sea". He experienced many months of hardship and danger, both in service and as a prisoner of war. He and his wife reared a large family, three of whom survive today. In 1917, Mr. Huffman was married to Miss Nellie Gray. She survives him. Also surviving are three sisters; Mrs. Clara Gillespie, River Forest, Mrs. Maimai Whitehead, Golf, ILL and Mrs. Pearl Booth, Hot Springs Ark. Letter from "Ned" to Harry V. Carter Vienna Ill, June 28, 1945 Dear Harry; I received you letter several days ago in regard to the house proposition. I think your idea a good one but as I see it the problem would be to get your father's consent to go to Chicago to live. He was sick up there last winter and looked bad when he came home. Said he was not going back. he works almost continuously in garden and yard. I don't see how he ____ it but to thrive and improve at it. Of course he takes it slow and easy. He has the best garden in town; almost everything you can think of in way of garden vegetables and they are doing fine. He has cabbage, greens, beans, potatoes carrots and other things already and the most things are not matured yet. A good garden sure helps out on the table supply. It is almost impossible to get meat here now, in the land of plenty. Several other things also are scarce, including cigarettes, sugar, shot gun shells, chewing gum, law mowers (are out) and all farm machinery. Automobiles tires etc also are taboo. I was elected Mayor of the city this spring and we have been working the streets, graveling etc. It is hard to get anyone to work. Getting back to the house etc., I think now would be the ideal time for them to sell the house in El Dorado. as they will never go back there to live. Of course one way you look at it, as long as they can rent it at a good price they can take less later on for it and still make as much money. the income tax now on the profit would eat them up. I doubt if they would be satisfied to live in Chicago. Daisy would like it as she would like to be near he off spring, but I doubt very much if Harry would by satisfied. Of course they could sell the house here at a profit at any time. Margaret and the children were here several days but left for her mothers Saturday. Nellie fell off a step ladder the other day and fractured a rib and has been in pretty bad condition for a couple of weeks. She is wearing a bandage Dr. Veach put on. She is now showing a little sign of improvement, but has been awfully sore for the past two weeks. I don't think she was hurt internally. You can write you father and mother about your propostion and see what they think about it. of course property in chicago as elsewhere if very high now. A house in Vienna you could have bought for $400.00 to 500.00 a few years ago is now selling for around $1500.00. I sold one a few months ago for $1500.00 that gave $500.00 for ten years ago. As far as an investment is concerned I believe you could buy for less money after the slump comes on. Let me hear from you when you have plenty of time. Best regards, Ned Huffman ii.
