Joyce; Johnson County Early Obituaries 1870's to 1975 Volume 1 George Washington Johnson George Washington Johnson, son of Tandy J. and Sarah McGinnis Johnson, was born Feb. 1, 1857, and departed this life Feb. 15, 1943, at the age of 86 years and 14 days. He was one of a large family, two brothers and two sisters having passed away many years ago. John L. Jones, Elizabeth Mitchell and Rosa Gourley, half-brother and half-sisters, are deceased. Frank Jones of Buncombe, his half-brother and Jim A. Jones of Dublin, Tex., his step-brother, are the last of this large family living. He was married to Martha Elizabeth Browning on Aug. 9, 1877. To this union were born two sets of twins, all dying in infancy and a son, Charles A. Johnson. Uncle George was born on the farm now owned by Frank Jones in Elvira Community, and he has spent his entire life near his birthplace. He was an energetic farmer and his many years of hard labor seemed but to have toughened his physique and strenghtened his vitality until just recent years, when he had to quit farming. He has made his home with Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Cummings for a little more than three years. He had been for many years a member of the New Hope Baptist Church and was active in the work there as long as he could attend. He was also a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge. Surviving his passing are two grandsons, Herschel and George Johnson, and six great-grandchildren: Verle, Bernice, Imogene and Ora Thomas and Mrs. Opha Kerr, all children of Mrs. Gladys Johnson Thomas, deceased and Karen Ruth Johnson. 1857-1943 John AriesJoy@aol.com wrote: >Help please?? Thank you, John, for providing this info. I was really happy to see it as well. You know what they say...."Answer one question and dozens more pop up." I found where a Tandy J. Johnson married Mrs. Sarah Brown in Union Co. Then, backtracking, where Sarah McGinnis married Armistead Brown in Union Co. I'm interested in learning more about Sarah McGINNIS. Who were her parents? Which Jones did she marry after Tandy Johnson? (I'm presuming he died.) My McGinnis line was in southern Illinois by 1840 and Johnson Co. by 1845. I am also a 1st cousin 3 times removed of George Washington Johnson's wife, Martha Elizabeth Browning. I have info on her parents, grandparents and siblings, if anyone is interested. By the way, twins run in the Browning line. Happily in Christ, Harlene Soper Brown (My Brown line is from NC & MO, not IL) Johnson Co.
