    3. Katy...THANK YOU for writing. My husband worked with Dr. Wm. R. Lawrence when they compiled the two volume record of the Choates in Southern IL.... When Dr. Lawrence was done with the research, he gave me several books about southern IL.... one was the book, Growing Up In Pusstown... I was excited thinking I might find out about Puss Waters..... I didn't find anything that helped me with my problem!! Interesting though..... With what you sent, it might give me ideas of where to look etc. [Since my grandma died in 1946, I think I can say this..... IF she is related to Puss Waters... it wasn't inherited by my grandma.... she never went to visit anyone.... she was less than 5' tall.....] Thanks again for writing.... just to give you another project to find for me........my great grandmother on the Greer side, was "full blooded Cherokee Indian", we have her picture... Everyone in the family says she was an indian.... BUT NO PROOF... My father said "her name was, Mary Elizabeth Blackeagle" On her marriage record in Union Co., IL [1843] her name is Mary Elizabeth McIntosh!!! Enough for today..... thanks, Louise

    3. Dear Listers, Your emails about Puss Waters intrigued me, although I have no connection. I have tracked her on census records back to Maury County, Tennessee in 1850, where she was living with her parents William L. and Portia Smith . By 1860, she is in Pope County , Illinois, living with her father. Her name is now Elizabeth Waters and she has a 6 month old daughter named Sarah. Illinois marriage records show a marriage between Elizabeth C. Smith and John R. Waters, Pope County, 10-31-1858. This child apparently did not survive. Later census records show Elizabeth as having one birth and none living. If anyone would like the details of all the census records I found, I'll be happy to comply. However, it may be that this is common knowledge.
