NANCY ANN3 HOWELL (SAMUEL2, JOHN1) was born in Johnson Co. Illinois. She married THOMAS J. RENTFRO, son of WILLIAM RENTFRO and RUTH BLANTON. Notes for THOMAS J. RENTFRO: Portrait and Biograpical Review Johnson County IL 1850-19__ Page 159-160 Thomas J. Rentfro, who is numbered among the farmers whose industry and practical knowledge of farming have so largely contributed to the growth of Johnson County, is comfortably situated on his farm on section 28, Grantsburg Township. He was born on the 6th of Martch, 1839, in one of the early pioneer homes in that twonship, a son of William S. Rentfro, who was a native of Tennessee. His father's education was conducted in subscription schools, which he cannot attent very often, however, as his parents were poor. They came to this State prior to 1840, making the journey by water, and were among the first settlers of Grantsburg Township, locating on a heavily timbered tract of land on section 28, building a rude cabin of logs ofr a dwelling. In a short time a better house was built of timber sawed with a whipsaw. The trees that were not used for lumber or fence-rails were burned to get them out of the way. The family led a primitive life, subsisting mostly on home products, varied by game, such as deer and wild turkeys, which were plentiful, and even bears and wolves prowled in the forests, and a panther was seen occasionally. there were no schools, churches or Mills near, and settlements were few and scattering. The grandfather of our subject built the first horse-power mill for grinding corn in his neighboorhood. William Rentfro lived with his parents, helping them in their pioneer task of hewing out a farm from the forests, until he was twenty one, and then began his independent career, and as an initial step towards the making of a home, selected a wife in the person of Miss Ruth Blanton, who was from Tennessee, where her parents lived and died. She was a true helpmate in every sinse of the word, and wolked faithfully by his side until her untimely death parted them in 1866. He survied her untill 1876, continuing on the old place until the last, and thus passed away one who hd witnessed much of the growth of the county, and had aided in its development from the iwlderness. His last resting place is on land which was once his own. He and his good wife reared a family of nine children, namely: Stephen C., a resident of Metropolis; William B., deceased; Hannah B., widow of B. Pyland; F. A. a resident of Grantsburg; Thomas J.; Sarah Jane, deceased; Rufus J. a resident of Texas; Elizabeth, wife of Robert Fitch, who lives on the old home place; and R. Taben, deceased. The subject of this biography was educated by subscription schools, and was well trained in farm work on the old farm, where he remained, assisting in its cultivation, until he was nearly thirty years old. He then married Miss Nancy A. Howell, a native of Johnson County, her people being among its early settlers, and to her active co-operation he is much indebted for the prosperity that he enjoys they were blessed with the following children: Rutha Jane, deceased; William S., a resident of Johnson County; Joshua A., at home with his parents; Nellie and Donnie, deceased; Sidney B., Charlie, Zell and Lura, at home with their parents. The children are being given good educations in the public schools, which they attend regularly. While still living with his father, Mr. Rentfro had succeeded in getting some land for himself, and at the time of his marriage, he built a little log cabin upon it, in which he and his bride began life together. He has improved the place greatly, had the land in a good state of tillage, has put up necessary buildings, and a primitave log cabin. Children of NANCY HOWELL and THOMAS RENTFRO are: i. 1. SO ILL SURNAMES
    2. Sille1937
    3. Hello to all on this new list My Southern Illinois surnames: CRIPPS, COLEMAN, HANCOCK, MINTON, MESSAMORE, NORTON - and of course various other surnames that married into these lines. Most of these names were in Union and Jackson Counties. (But of course we have 'spill overs') Granville HANCOCK came from Wayne Co KY to Lick Creek, Union Co IL in 1870. I know that one brother, Lewis HANCOCK, also came to the Lick Creek area at the same time. Since I have found other HANCOCKs in Johnson CO - just across the county line from Lick Creek - I suspect some other brothers of Granville HANCOCK may come to the area. I would especially like to contact anyone researching HANCOCKs in Johnson Co to see if there is in fact a connection. Of course I'll take any thing anyone has on any of the other families too - <g> Jane

    3. Cindy Pegg: Thanks for the Rah!Rah! Got my courage up now. Looking for parents of Sarah Jane Hall who married Thomas Andrew Smyth/Smith in 1851 in Johnson County. She is buried by her son William Larkin Smith in the Evergreen Cem. in Makanda. Also, looking for parents of John Thomas Brown who married Eliza Jane Smith in 1877. He was born Mar. 22, 1851 and died at the age of 35 on Apr. 15, 1866. He died in Tunnel Hill and is buried in the County Line Cemetery. Have not found a stone for him. What happened to Paten/Peyton Smith, son of Thomas and Sarah Jane Smith? Don't think he ever married. He is on a census with his mother at age 35 in 1900, Williamson County, IL. Glad to meet you Gayle, Barb and Doug. Wish I could help. Betty Capps bkellick@mountvernon.net

    2. Hi Johnson Co. rooters. I am researching FOWLER, SANDERS, HOOD, KUYKENDALL. Would like to exchange, help or receive help on any of the above and connected families. Have extensive info for the KUYKENDALL family back to Holland. Have one unresolved problem before making a valid connection of Joseph, Sr/Mary Taylor/Sarah Cooper to John Kuykendall/Rebecca Hardin. Maybe one of you could help. This family is represented in George B. Kuykendall's book A HISTORY OF THE KUYKENDALL FAMILY, but believe it has some erroneous information. Look forward to hearing from all of you. Barb Barnhart
