Hi, I am researching several families in Johnson and Massac Counties. The EMERSONs lived around Reevesville and New Columbia so their records are in both counties . James EMBERSON/EMMERSON came to Johnson Co. about 1840. His first wife was Susannah McDANIEL but I have never been able to find anything else about her. Would really like to hear from anyone that has any info. at all. James & Susannah's son, Drury Willis Emerson, was my ancestor. He was born abt. 1825 in TN (where?) and mar. Martha Ann EVANS in Johnson Co. on 16 March 1845. She was born in TN abt. 1827/28 and died in 1874. That is all I know about her. Would like to hear if anyone has an EVANS/EMERSON connection in your family. Now for the impossible - looking for info. on Hiram SMITH who was born in KY abt. 1807/1810. He mar. 1st, Mary (GIBBS?). They had Cebrina, John, George, Thomas, Malinda, and William M. Cebrina is my ancestor and she mar. Franklin (Frank) FISHER in Johnson Co. Hiram mar. 2nd Nancy GRADEN in 1855. At first I thought Hiram was an unusual name but there were three Hiram SMITHs in Johnson County at about the same time. I have quite a lot on the EMERSON and FISHER families that I'm willing to share but hardly anything on the others: EVANS, GIBB(s), McDANIEL, & SMITH. Thanks, Helen Seaton helen.seaton@asu.edu Mesa, AZ

Notes for JOSEPH BENTON KUYKENDALL: A HISTORY OF JOHNSON COUNTY ILLINOIS p. 436 by PT Chapman pub. 1925 PORTRAIT AND BIOGRAPHICAL REVIEW JOHNSON COUNTY ILLINOIS 1850- Joseph Benton Kuykendall, of Vienna Township, Johnson County, was born on a farm ten miles northeast of Vienna January 9, 1842. His father, Hon. Andrew Jackson Kuykendall, was born in what is now Hardin County, Ill., March 3, 1815, and was the son of Joseph Kuykendall, a native of North Carolina. He was a descendant of one of three brothers, natives of Holland, who came to America in early Colonial days. The great-grandfather of our subject, who was named Joseph, removed from North Carolina to Kentucky in an early day, and spent his last years in that State. The grandfather of our subject went to Kentucky with his parents and resided there until 1815, when he emigrated to the Territory of Illinois, and it was while the family was en route to Johnson county that the father of our subject was born. The family located near the present site of Sanburn, in Johnson County. At that time the greater portion of the Territory was practically uninhabited except by the Indians. Deer, bear and other wild game were abundant. Grandfather Kuykendall improved a farm and resided upon it until his death The maiden name of his wife, the grandmother of our subject, was Mary Taylor. She was a sister of Col. Richard Taylor, or "Uncle Dick," as he was familiarly called, of Chicago. Hon. A. J. Kuykendall had but limited opportunities for securing an education in his younger days, his education being principally obtained after he reached manhood. After his marriage he taught a school of small scholars for five months, and soon afterward taught a term of twelve months. At that time the schools were taught in a log cabin on the subscription plan. While teaching, Mr. Kuykendall employed his spare time in studying law, and was soon admitted to the Bar. He began practice at Vienna, and very early became interested in public affairs, being frequently called upon to fill offices of trust. In 1843 he was first elected to the State Legislature, and he was re-elected many time in both the House and Senate, being a member of one House or the other for about thirty years. He started out in his public career as a Democrat, and was a Senator in the Legislature at the time the war came on, having been elected by that party. When an extra session was called by the Governor to meet the exigencies of the times, he called a meeting of his constituents and told them in substance that he loved his country and that he should vote to raise men and means to bring the war to a successful termination, in order that the Union might be saved. This brought forth a shower of protests, but he stood firm to his purpose, supported the country with true loyalty, and from that time on was a Republican in politics and a stanch supporter of Republican principles. In 1864 he was elected to Congress by the Republican party, In August, 1861, he was commissioned Major of the Thirty-first Illinois Volunteers and served for one year, when he resigned and returned home. Soon afterward he located on a farm, and for many years was engaged in general farming and stock-raising, though much of his time was taken up by his official duties. His death took place in Vienna, Ill., May 11, 1891. August 16, 1836, Mr. Kuykendall married Cynthia Simpson, who was born May 7, 1818, in Illinois. Her father, William Simpson, was born near Detroit Mich. His father, also named William Simpson, was one of the first settlers of the Territory of Illinois, locating about ten miles form Vienna, at the junction of the roads leading from Kaskaskia to Golconda and from metropolis to Shawneetown. The nearest neighbor he had at the time of this settlement there was twenty-five miles away. Erecting a double log house, he opened a tavern, which was popularly known as Simpsons Tavern. He also bought live stock, which he drove to the Detroit market. He spent his last days in Johnson County, Ill. The maiden name of his wife was Polly Jones. The grandfather of the subject of this sketch was young when his parents brought him to Illinois. After his marriage he removed to Mississippi, where he lived for one year, when he returned to Johnson County and purchased a tract of land covered with timber adjoining his fathers farm at Simpson Hill, upon which he resided until his death. The maiden name of the grandmother of our subject was Keziah Parmley; she was a daughter of Samuel Parmley, and was born in Kentucky. The mother of our subject has spent her entire life in her native county, and still resides in Vienna. She reared six of her fifteen children, viz; Mary J., Kate L., Joseph B., Eliza E., Sarah A. and Edith. Joseph B. attended school quite steadily during his younger years, and did not engage in any active business until after leaving the army. He enlisted in Company D, Thirty-first Illinois Volunteers, in August, 1861, went South with the regiment, and joined the Army of the Tennessee. Among the more important battles in which he was engaged may be mentioned those of Belmont, Jackson and the siege and capture of Vicksburg. In 1864 he joined Shermans command at Kenesaw Mountain. He was honorably discharged in August, 1864, at the expiration of his term of service. Returning to Vienna, for upwards of two years Mr. Kuykendall was engaged in the mercantile business. He then embarked in milling, which has since engaged his attention. He is the proprietor of the Vienna Rolling Mills, which are furnished with all the best modern machinery and have a capacity of one hundred barrels per day. In 1863 he married Eliza Gorham, who was born in Milwaukee, Wis, and is a daughter of S. A. and Nancy J. (Reed) Gorham. To this union there have been born four children, viz: Carrie, Andrew (need to get next pageapparently I didnt copy it.) Children of JOSEPH KUYKENDALL and ELIZA GORHAM are: i. CARRIE4 KUYKENDALL. ii. ANDREW KUYKENDALL. 5. EDITH3 KUYKENDALL (ANDREW J.2, JOSEPH1). She married ALMUS GEORGE DAMRON, son of CHARLES DAMRON and MARY CARSON. Notes for FRANCES MARION "NED" HUFFMAN: Will proved 23rd day of May, 1966 (I have a copy of FINAL REPORT OF EXECUTOR filed Nov. 22, 1967) Obituary: Vienna Times April 196_ Frances Marion (Ned) Huffman, 79, died 1:00 o'clock Saturday afternoon in the Marion Memorial hospital. Mr. Huffman had been in declining health for the past year. Mr. Huffman had been a resident of Vienna the greater part of his life. He received his early education in Vienna and later, attend the University of Illinois. Mr. Huffman served his country in the Armed Forces during World War I. He experienced service in the European theater of war and participated in some of the major battles of the war. After being honorable discharged from the Army with the rank of Lieutenant, he entered the men's clothing business in Vienna. He was an energetic merchant and his business thrived. He retired from active business life in the year 1936. Following his retirement, he continued to take an active part and interest in civic affairs of the city. His progressiveness and energetic spirit contributed largely to the betterment of Vienna, Johnson county and the country as a whole. Mr. Huffman served the city of Vienna four terms as mayor. It was during his tenure of office that the public square was paved due largely to his influence. The city hall was also built during his term of office. He was a member of the Vienna Township High school board and on the building committee when the gymnasium was built. He was also active and favored the building of the present Methodist church building. This was the type of leadership he rendered, which made him a good and useful citizen. Locally he was a member of the Methodist church and always gave it his support. He was a charter member of the Vienna Kiwanis Club, Harry Sullins Post, American Legion and the Farm Bureau. He was a 50 year member of the Order of Ancient Free and Accepted Masons. Mr. Huffman was the son of George and Mary Ann Jones Huffman. He was born in Simpson, March 23,1887. His father and mother were prominent citizens of Johnson county in the middle nineteenth century. His father also served his country well. In 1863, he enlisted in Company G, 14th Illinois Cavalry under Capt. Williams Prickens in General Sherman's Army and participated in the famous "march to the sea". He experienced many months of hardship and danger, both in service and as a prisoner of war. He and his wife reared a large family, three of whom survive today. In 1917, Mr. Huffman was married to Miss Nellie Gray. She survives him. Also surviving are three sisters; Mrs. Clara Gillespie, River Forest, Mrs. Maimai Whitehead, Golf, ILL and Mrs. Pearl Booth, Hot Springs Ark. Letter from "Ned" to Harry V. Carter Vienna Ill, June 28, 1945 Dear Harry; I received you letter several days ago in regard to the house proposition. I think your idea a good one but as I see it the problem would be to get your father's consent to go to Chicago to live. He was sick up there last winter and looked bad when he came home. Said he was not going back. he works almost continuously in garden and yard. I don't see how he ____ it but to thrive and improve at it. Of course he takes it slow and easy. He has the best garden in town; almost everything you can think of in way of garden vegetables and they are doing fine. He has cabbage, greens, beans, potatoes carrots and other things already and the most things are not matured yet. A good garden sure helps out on the table supply. It is almost impossible to get meat here now, in the land of plenty. Several other things also are scarce, including cigarettes, sugar, shot gun shells, chewing gum, law mowers (are out) and all farm machinery. Automobiles tires etc also are taboo. I was elected Mayor of the city this spring and we have been working the streets, graveling etc. It is hard to get anyone to work. Getting back to the house etc., I think now would be the ideal time for them to sell the house in El Dorado. as they will never go back there to live. Of course one way you look at it, as long as they can rent it at a good price they can take less later on for it and still make as much money. the income tax now on the profit would eat them up. I doubt if they would be satisfied to live in Chicago. Daisy would like it as she would like to be near he off spring, but I doubt very much if Harry would by satisfied. Of course they could sell the house here at a profit at any time. Margaret and the children were here several days but left for her mothers Saturday. Nellie fell off a step ladder the other day and fractured a rib and has been in pretty bad condition for a couple of weeks. She is wearing a bandage Dr. Veach put on. She is now showing a little sign of improvement, but has been awfully sore for the past two weeks. I don't think she was hurt internally. You can write you father and mother about your propostion and see what they think about it. of course property in chicago as elsewhere if very high now. A house in Vienna you could have bought for $400.00 to 500.00 a few years ago is now selling for around $1500.00. I sold one a few months ago for $1500.00 that gave $500.00 for ten years ago. As far as an investment is concerned I believe you could buy for less money after the slump comes on. Let me hear from you when you have plenty of time. Best regards, Ned Huffman ii. Descendants of John Gresham Generation No. 1 1. JOHN1 GRESHAM was born Abt. 1760 in North Carolina. He married AMANDA. Notes for JOHN GRESHAM: Source Gene M. Gresham Nikkel 212 Westdale Co. El Cajon, CA 92020-2246 "John Gresham/Grissom, may have had five daughters; the 1818 census indicates that possibility. Also, on December 23, 1818 a Sally Gressum married James Finney in Bond County, Illinois. On June 20, 1803, the Barren County, Kentucky Court stated: "John Gresham is entitled to 200 acres as per entry filed." (Certificate no. 591)--This was on Hungary Creek. In 1806 John assigned this acreage to Alsey Dean. John had lived on this property for one year prior to 1803; the certificate mentioned Gresham's improvement and spring, and the improvement meant cabin or crop. Dean used the certificate to have his survey made, and the Grant was then issured in his name. In Old Surveys, Barren County, Kentucky 1799-1835, it shows that on April 19, 1805 Ambrose Mannon was allowed 96 acres, Cert. no. 716, on the west side of Long Creek, John Grissom, Director; this was in the Allen County, Kentucky area. (Confirmed by the Land Office Division, State Capitol, Frankfort Germany.) John Grissom was on the Barren County Tax List in 1810: 1 male over 45; 5 males 0-10, 1 female 25-45, 1 female 10-16. Also: Hannah Grissom was on the same tax list: 1 female 25-45, 1 male 0-10, and 2 slaves We are perplexed about this: Was Hannah a sister in law of John Gresham/Grisham/Grissom? Or how were they related? The records indicate that a number of Barren County, Kentucky residents, or their descendants removed to southern Illinois. Our John Gresham/Grisham/Grissom was apparently a friend of Joel Johnston, as well as the other Johnstons; also, Richard McGinness, both were in Southern Barren County, and later in Southern Illinois counties. Our John Gresham was on the 1816 Personal Propery Tax List for Pope County, Illinois; he had two horses. The area of his residence was Waters of the Bay, the same as Joel Johnston, who had four horses. In is likely that John Gresham's oldest son, Jeremiah must have been with him, possibly to clear the area and build a cabin. The 1818 State Census for Johnson County, Illinois, taken between April 1 and June, 1818 lists "John Gressham; 1 free white male 21 & up, and eleven other inhabitants. The 1820 Federal Census for Johnson County, Illinois lists our John as John Grishum, 7 white males under 21, one 21 & up, 5 white females under 21, and 1 21 & up. At the Johnson County, Illinois July Court, 1818 the Court appointed Adam Harvick, Joel Johnson, and John Grisham to view a road from the new seat of justice (Vienna) to Golconda, as far as the county line of Pope. On November 19 1818 John Gissom bought eighty acres in Section 5, Township 13 South, Range 4 East, in Johnson County, close to the county border with Pope. On Monday, December 21, 1818 the Pope County Court ordered the sheriff to pay John Grisham $6.00 for three wolf scalps. The Court records show that a number of other settlers had had to contend with wolves during the last part of 1818. (In August our other ancestor, John Whiteside received $2.00 for one wolf scalp.) John Gresham/Grisham/Grissom served as a grad juror at the Johnson Voluntary, Illinois County Court meetings in October and November, 1819. In October 1820 John encountered an unfortunate domestic problem. Elizabeth (apparently his second wife) eloped, and John inserted a notice in the Illinois Intelligencer to forewarn parties concerned against her. Then on June 13, 1821, our John Gresham transferred all his land to Samuel Stanton Simpson. Biograpical Review states on page 176-178 that John Gresham/Grisham/Grissom departed for Tennessee with his son Jeremiah. Apparntly ther was no correspondence between John and his numerous descendants in southern Illinois. It seems logical that Jeremiah settled in Henderson County, Tenn. & maintained a shoemaker shop form 1830 to 1870. Since he was a tanner in Johnson County, Illinois, & Biographical Review had stated that his uncle, Warren had become skilled at shoemakeing in his early days, and no doubt had inspired Jeremiah to take up this trade. A John Grissom is named in several petitions in the Henderson County records, but we lack the proof that he is ours. Most of the Henderson County Court Records were destroyed by a fire occurred in 1863,when the Third Michigan Cavalry were quartered in the Masonic Hall which served as the Courthouse. The brief summary on the basic known facts on John Gresham points out the problem we have encountered on our search. Your help on this would be greatly appreciated. Source Gene M.
