    3. Hi Greg and everyone I had a few questions about your posting Greg. I have ARTABORN DENNY HOWELL (son of Samuel HOWELL b. December 22, 1822 Barren County Kentucky d. Oct. 5 1900 Gantown, Johnson County, Illinois & Ruthey 'Jane' SIMPSON) m. Sarah MODGLIN. I have only one son listed for them a Harry HOWELL. I would love to have dates on this family. Does anyone have more on the MODGLIN family tree and history? How about WHITESIDES? The only WHITESIDES I have in my file is Sarah C. WHITESIDES who married Stephen F. KELTNER b. December 22, 1847 (son of Blant KELTNER and Mary FARRIS). I have lots on FARRIS from the contacts from the FARRIS FILES but I can always use more. I might come up with some more questions. Thanks Mara Harris

    1. GREESON & SHEARER and others
    2. MBruce9681
    3. Hi Everyone I received this letter from Mrs. Nikkel in July 1997 I thought there might be others who would be interested. Dr. Harold G. Carter is the son of Dr. Frank CARTER and Mabel GALEENER and grandson of James Harrison CARTER and Amanda Belle HARVICK. I can always use more information on all my families so please contact me if you know something. Mara Dear Mara Referring to your Para. 2, that was an interesting comment about the Greesons; I don't believe it would apply to my Greshams, but is worth more study; Isaac GREESON was a taxpayer, Orange County, North Carolina 1755. Nicholas GREESON was also a taxpayer there in 1779. Abraham and James GREESON were each taxpayers in Warren County, Georgia in 1818. P. T. Chapman simply obtained the surname "DIAL" from a Mrs. Calhoun's remarkes, but it was non-applicable. (Mrs. Nikkel was referring to ___(Ester?) Dial marrying David SHEARER). David Shearer's wife was Ester BOWMAN. David was buried on his farm, and I don't yet have the date of his decease. I will certainly let you know when I get it. John BOWMAN was no. 98 on the Johnson County 1818 State Census. (1 male, 5 femailes) David SHEARER was no. 12, and my Gr-gr-gr Grandfatehr, John Gresham was no. 13; both Davids, and John G. were also on the Federal 1820 census for Johnson County. Their children: EUPHA SHEARER, born January 30, 1797; married John WHITESIDE February 8, 1816, Pope County, Illinois, died December 20, 1862, Hardin County, Illinois. Buried in Whiteside Cemetery, Pope County, Illinois. ELIZABETH SHEARER, born ____; married Jackson SIMPSON JANE SHEARER, born October 22, 1810; m. Thomas JACKSON, b. 1807 Tenn. HATTIE SHEARER, born ___; m. Samuel VAUGH. HENRY SHEARER, born ___; m. ____ PERRY SHEARER, b. ___; m. Miss MATHIS. ?GREENVILLE P. SHEARER, b. ___ m. Minerva GULAY Thanks you for Wyoma W. Riley's letter; she and I have exchanged a lot of reports on the Gresham/Grissom family since 1962. Last week I called Dr. Harold GALEENER CARTER, and talked both with him and May E. (FAIRCLOUGH) CARTER--quite a lengthy conversation. He explained that his father had also been a physician; that he was 83 and born in El Centro. May was very nice; said she was 85, and did her own housework and cooking. She invited me over, but I explained that I was pretty busy with my paper work. She had talked with you recently, she said. I'll inform you when I have some more date which you might want. Best Wishes, Gene M. Gresham Nikkel

James Simmons was in Lincoln county and some of Thomas family may have lived in Kentucky. We do not know their names though as yet. 3) There was a Wiley Simmons who came from kentucky and settled in Johnson county where he died there. At first we thought this was are Wiley. He died in Johnson County at the age of almost 80 years. Are Wiley was only 60 Something. This Wiley had a daughter named Letha who married John Albright. William F. died at Emet Oklahoma in 1903 and James H. died at Milburn Oklahoma in 1913. She leaves 15 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. AUnt Mary had lived in Vienna practically all her life. Her kindly and cheerful disposition her sweet and hopeful spirit and her serene faith marked her as a true mother of Israel. From her childhood she cherished a Christian faith that was an inspiration to her family and her associates. For a number of years she and her husband were members of the Presbyterian Church but later they transferred to the Christian Church and were faithful members of that Church to the time of death. Although she reached an extreme age her faculties remained clear. She remembered many of the events in the early history of Vienna and loved to talk of them and of people who lived here more than half a century ago. Funeral services were held at the Christian Church at 2 oclock Tuesday afternoon conducted by Rev JB Jones who delivered an eloquent and impressive sermon emphasizing the consolation and reward that come to those that live a Christian life. Especially interesting were his references to the scenes and changes which the deceased had witnessed during a ife extending through almost 4 generations. She had seen the log cabin on the wooded hillside nad the timbered valleys give place to the beautiful homes and teemimg fields, the oxcart and the old time stagecoach give place to the modern truck and touring car. The bush arbor for holding religious service give place to the fashionable and artistic churches of the present time.... Those in attendance from a distance were James Hogg of Metropolis, James H Carter of Cairo, Mr and Mrs Levi Chitty and Harvey Verhines of Simpson, Miss Minnie Bridges of Chelsea Oklahoma, Mrs Belle Cowsert of St Louis and Roy Rinenhower.

Shoemaker 7)Francis M. Simmons & Ella Mae Hogg Notes: 1)This is not a exact list there may be mistakes. I have tried to include as much as correct information as possible. 2)Hezekiah Simmons; There were two Hezekiah Simmons. One married Nancy Veach and lived in Johnson county. The other married a Martha Jane Kinion and lived in Cape Giradeau Mo.. One was the son of Lewis Simmons and Sarah Ann Ervin and the other was the son of Wiley Simmons and Mary Ann Ervin. 3)Monroe Simmons; The information that Mara posted listed Monroe Simmons as the son of Peter Simmons. But the Obituary of Sarah Ann Simmons who married Jeremiah Joseph O'Brien say it is her son. The article in the Vienna Times on Peter Simmons death says that Peter Simmons sat down for dinner and felt fine at his sons Monroe's house. It should be Grandson because John Calvin Simmons son of Peter married Sarah Ann Simmons and had Monroe. After Peter got up from the table after about 15 minutes he droped dead. Although the death was cancer of the face, it sounds more like heart failure to just drop dead. They may have not been able to find a cause and blamed the canncer. Lewis Simmons came of age in Wayne county Tenn.. He married in either Wayne county Tenn. or went to Lincoln County Tenn. where Hezekiah Ervin and Mary Polly Simmons were and married there. Wiley Simmons also wennt with Wiley. Mary Ann Polly Ervin was a daughter of Hezekiah & Mary Polly Simmons. Mary Polly Simmons was a daughter of James Simmons and Katherine Millinder. James Simmons amy have been a brother to Thomas Simmons, They were about the same age. In 1832 Wiley and Lewis went to Cape Giradeau Mo. and took their families there to meet Hezekiah Ervin. Hezekiah moved there the same time. James Simmons died in lincoln county Tenn. in 1828. In 1836 Wiley and Lewis move to Johnson County Illinois. Peter Simmons stays with dad Thomas in Waynne county Tenn. until about 1846 when they sold all their land in Wayne county and move to Johnson Counnty. More of Thomas Simmons sons later Greg Simmons
