Hi - any Kuykendall Johnson Co. researchers out there besides Mara and Bill Oliver? Need some help!! Have been researching the Kuykendall family back to Van-Kuykendall in NY. Would like input on the following information and questions. Listing the families I have without dates for right now: Joseph Kuykendall, Jr./Mary Polly Taylor m in Christian Co., KY came to Johnson Co., IL abt 1814-15 James Moore Kuykendall/Lydia Dean Cooper/Lydia (Lidy) Cooley West William Harrison Kuykendall/Lilia Cockran Andrew J. Kuykendall/Cynthia Simpson Unknow female m Mr. Smith Questions: When did Mary Taylor Kuykendall die and where is she buried? I assumed she had died when Joseph m 2nd Sarah (Sally) Cooper bef or abt 1822. Some researchers believe Joseph/Mary were divorced. Has anyone found a record to validate this? Does Vienna have divorce records for that time period? Most researchers do not record William Harrison as s/o Joseph. Supposedly, they were the only Kuykendall family in Johnson Co. William Harrison was b 1812 and was too young to be Joseph’s brother. This is a questionable connection. Others record Lila Cockran Kuykendall as a dau of Joseph when Lila Kuykendall m George W. Brazel 10 Nov 1842 in Johnson Co. Believe this is incorrect. She was the widow of William Harrison Kuykendall. There were Kuykendalls in Gallatin Co., IL and believe they were cousins of Joseph. Joseph was in Gallatin for a brief period 1815-16 - signer of petition for repeal of an act concerning the jurisdiction of Justice of the Peace General Assembly. Some believe Bellasant who m Peter Smith in Gallatin 31 Jul 1833 is the dau of Joseph. Bellasant could be connected to Lewis and Robert of Gallatin, sons of Benjamin. Believe Lewis and Robert are cousins of Joseph. Others record her as Mary - (named after her mother). In early Johnson Co records, you find Joseph, Philander and Stephen Kuykendall. Believe Joseph and Philander were brothers. Stephen and William Kuykendall were recorded in KY records in the same area as Joseph’s relatives. Have not made a connection for them. According to court records Hardin Kuykendall was connected to John Crenshaw who ran the Old Slave House in Gallatin. This Kuykendall could have been in Gallatin or KY. According to bios in Johnson Co., Joseph was b in NC s/o Joseph b in NC and they migrated to KY where Joseph Sr. died. Have not been able to validate a death for Joseph Sr. in KY. According to Esther Calhoun Love’s diary, his mother married Joseph and had a dau Malinda who married Elihu P. Calvert. She is in Joseph’s will. Questions: Has anyone found land records for Joseph, Jr. in Johnson Co. Specifically, after 1828 where land from Pulaski, AR might have been recorded in Johnson Co? Does anyone know exactly when he died and where he is buried in Johnson Co? Did he have a will or estate settlement? The above locations of birth for Joseph Sr.’s children are recorded according to migration of the family: NY>NJ>VA>NC>SC>TN>KY>AR>MO>IL> and some went on to TX>CA. Have a letter written by Joseph Benton Kuykendall s/o Andrew J./Cynthia Simpson that was published in Kuykendall Families by George Benson Kuykendall c early 1900’s that I will send later. Believe there are some inconsistencies in the generations. I have an original photo of the group, as James Harrison Carter is my gg- grandfather. I have information in my family file on the following Ex-Sheriffs Alexander J. Gray m. Izora Oliver; Mark Whiteaker m. Elizabeth Deaton; Rob Roy Ridenhower m. Alice L. Carter; James Harrison Carter m. 1st Eliza Caldwell, 2nd Amanda Belle Harvick. I know some Hankins desecendants but they don't know all of their line yet. They married into the Carter/Caldwell line. Mara GROUP OF EX SHERIFFS OF JOHNSON COUNTY From The Vienna Democrat, November 9, 1906 Above we produce a likeness of seven Ex-Sheriffs and our present Sheriff. We fell that this is a remarkable group of men, as it presents an unbroken chain of officials since the year 1870, with the exception of the face of Jas. F. Whitehead who was our Sheriff during the years 1894 to 1898, and who failed to come to this reunion on last Saturday, although invited to be present. he now lives in Tunnel Hill, township. A. J. Gray, was born in this county in the year 1843. Was elected Sheriff in 1870 and again in 1872, serving two terms of two years each. He now lives in this city, and has never lived outside the county, and is yet an active citizen. He is one of the boys who wore the blue. Jas. H. Carter, is another native of Johnson county, and was born in 1844.He was elected Sheriff in 1876, also having two terms to his credit. He served his country during the great conflict of �62 to �65, and is now one of the leading business men of our city. Hon. W. C. Allen was born in this city in the year 1844 and was elected Sheriff in 1878 and served two terms of two years each. He now lives in Washington, D. C., but was here recently on a visit to old friends. He also saw service for the preservation of the Union in the sixties. Mark Whiteaker, a citizen of Vienna, was born in 1835. He answered his country�s call during the sixties and served faithfully and well. In 1882, the people of our county elected him Sheriff and he served the county for a term of four years, making a splendid record as a worth official. J. H. Frizzell, present mayor of our city is the only Democrat in this list of ex-Sheriffs. He was born in 1852, and was elected Sheriff in 1886, and served the county for term of four years, making a splendid official. R. R. Ridenhower was born in Goreville Township in the year 1867 and is just now in the zenith of his manhood. He resides on a farm two miles southeast of this city and is prospering. He was elected Sheriff in the year 1890 and served a term of four years. M. A. Hankins, another of the list who saw service during the sixties was born in 1845. He was elected Sheriff in 1898, and served one term. He is now a farmer, owning considerable valuable land in this county, beside has interests in Oklahoma, where his family reside and he divides his time here and there. J. L. Veach our present Sheriff was born on a farm three miles north of this city in the year 1873. He was elected Sheriff four years ago, and has made an efficient officer. He now owns the farm on which he was born, and besides a home in this city where he resides.

Hi Everyone. I was looking at the Johnson County Heritage Journal for Jan 1998. on page 6 is reprinted one of the entries in The PORTRAIT and BIOGRAPHICAL REVIEW (1897) of Johnson Co (and others) states. The entry is for that of Hon. Isaac A. J. Parker. I will type it up here. I want to know if anyone else has information on this PARKER family? I have several PARKERS that married into the family. One is Augustus PARKER who married Alice HARVICK (dau of Harrison HARVICK and Frances E. UTLEY who married in 1857). The time frame works but before I go plugging anything in I just want to be sure. Thanks Mara Hon. Isaac A. J. PARKER was the son of Moses D. and Louisa Elizabeth Jackson PARKER, of Tennessee and Alabama, respectively, and was born in Tishomingo Co. Miss. in 1840..." He was reared and educated in Tippah Co. Miss. and resided there until the breaking out of the war, when, the family being all strong sympathizers with the cause of the Union, their property was confiscated and they were compelled to leave the State. On Oct. 7, 1862, Mr. Parker joined the Hatcher scouts at Corinth, Miss. and served until the company was honorably discharged, after which he enlisted in the Mississippi Rangers, which were soon afterward incorporated with the First Alabama Cavalry. He was commissioned 1st Lieutenant and served as such until the expiration of his term of enlistment, Jan. 8, 1864, when he served a few months as recruiting officer at Memphis, Tenn. In January, 1865 he removed to Illinois and settled in Johnson County, Purchasing a farm near Vienna, which he has occupied continuously ever since. He commenced teaching school in Mississippi when seventeen years of age, and continued to follow that profession until the breaking out of the war. Soon after locating in Johnson County, he resumed his former vocati8on and taught school a portion of each year for nineteen years. In 1858 he was converted and joined the Christian Church at Hickory Flats, Miss. And in 1882 was ordained a preacher in that denomination. In December, 1891 he engaged in the sale of agricultural implements, wagons, carriages, musical instuments, etc., and during all this time he has superintedned the improvement and culitvation of his farm. In 1858 he married Miss Jemima J. Clary, a native of Indiana� they have had ten children, viz: Charles Addison, Lucas, Augustus, Lilly, Mary Oma, Willis, Beverly, Olive Ethel, Alice Myrtle, and Miletus, deceased. Mr. Parker is a Democrat in Politics and in 1888 was elected a member of the Thirty-Sixth General Assembly of the State of Illinois, in which he served with fidelity and distinction." Shirley Wolfe acting editor of the Johnson Co. Heritage Journal notes that Mrs. Parker obit will be published in a later edition.

Looking for information on Caleb Cotton who was in Johnson or Pope Co Illinois. His daughter my GGGrandmother was born at Vienna, Johnson Co. Illinois. 12 Mar, 1827. Caleb was born in NC about 1780, was in Rutherford Tennessee, and then came to Southern Illinois. He married Nancy Meredith Nov 6, 1801 in Surry Co. NC. They had children: James, Malinda, Mahala, Sarah, Caleb Caroll, Nancy Josephine, George Washington, Noah Shelton, Gabriel Lovoen, Margaret Louisa, and Peninah Shropshire. Married Feb 13, 1887 in Johnson County, IL to Jardiney Calhaun (known as Florence) S.W. is buried at West Eden Cemetary in Johnson County along with their infant son, George. W. b. Apr. 5, 1888, d. July 31, 1888. They also had Auty b. June 12, 1893. Auty and Jardiney moved to MO. in ?? Auty met a tragic death in St. Louis in may 1924. Do these names mean anything to you? I'm interested in Jardiney; she was a half sister to William Calvin Watson and Lively Rachael Lemmon. Their mother's name was Elizabeth and she went by Betsy Faught in 1895. Would you check your "A History of JohnsonCounty, IL: for possible reference. Do you live near Johnson County? I know William left IL. around 1900/1901 and went to MO. and Jardiney was there until around 1914. I would love to get some back ground on their mother.
