Frederick RODDEWIG was born about 1798 and George Henry RODDEWIG was born about 1805 and may have been brothers. George arrived in Galena earliest, as he married there in 1841. Frederick's family arrived about 1845. The 1850 census of Galena, for Frederick, shows a child born at sea (Atlantic Ocean) about 1845. At least 5 of Frederick's children are listed as born in Hanover (City of Hanover? Kingdom of Hanover?). So I have tried to locate naturalization records. I was only able to locate this one, which was for Ernest born about 1843 Hanover. Ernest married Mary Theresa HILGERS in Galena in 1866. ************************************************** Naturalization: Petition, Final Oath and Certificate Page 41 County Court, JoDaviess Co., ILL petitioned Monday 17 Sept 1888 Ernest Roddewig a native of Germany in Illinois 43 years. Oath and certificate dated 30 Oct 1888. ********************************************** This is yet another document indicating Frederick's family arrived in 1845. Unfortunately, I have been unable to locate Ernest's "Application for Citizenship". Perhaps another RODDEWIG researcher would like to search for it. At the time, I was not trying to locate one for George Henry RODDEWIG either, only for the children of Frederick RODDEWIG. Finding the naturalization application for Ernest or for George Henry would help to pinpoint a town in Germany where they resided. In a Scott Co., Iowa county history it shows Ferdinand RODDEWIG, born 26 Jun 1828 Westphalia, to be a son of "Frederick and Charlotte" and that Frederick had been the clerk of court in Bielefeld. I have also looked at Evangelishe church records of Bielefeld and although there are RODDEWIG's residing there, I could not locate a birth record for George Henry, Frederick or any of Frederick's children. This same county history indicates Frederick was Lutheran, but that Charlotte was Catholic. I have not yet searched the Catholic church records. As for the maiden name of Frederick's wife, Charlotte FRONNE/FROMME, I found this on Clayton Co., Iowa film #1673367 #129. I looked for the 1909 death of Frederick's daughter, Hannah, Mrs. Henry F. HEILMAN and it gave her mother as Charlotte FRONNE (or Charlotte FROMME).
