Death came to him as a decided relief from constant suffer- ing and helplessness. Mr. Hicks was a native of Kentucky, where he was born Jan 9, 1829. When a compara- tively young man he fitted himself for the position of veterinary surgeon in which profession he eventually became quite pro- ficient and which he followed during the larger part of his after life until incapaciated by ill health. In March 1864, he enlisted as a member of Company A, Ilth Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, and served with distinction until the close of the war. For a short time after the conclusion of that bloody strife he located with his family at Elizabeth and from there went to Wisconsin, residing much of the time at Boscobel and Lancaster. About six years ago he with his wife took up their residence in this city where their home has since been and where they have a large circle of warm friends. Besides his wife he is survived three sons, Frank of St. Croix Minn., Charles and William also reside in Minnesota and one daughter who is married and lives in Lan- easter Wis. The deceased was a member of the G.A.R.
