Fellow Researchers, The hotel name was changed from the White Star Hotel to the Stockton Hotel. by 1911, per letter on the hotel stationery written by my ancestor Mary Ann Williams 1820-1913 (1/h John Chapman VanDelinder, 2/h Edward L. Bruce). Her grandaughter Alice Sophia Guild wed Wm. Z.Whitson in 1878. Alice & Bill Whitson had 7 children in all, and 4 were born before this hotel was built. On page 213 of volume 1 of the 1990 published book "Discovering Our Past" by the Heritage League of NW IL, there is a reference to the White Star Hotel being built in 1889 by my Wm. Z. Whitson and the that first billiard room was there. Tsk! Tsk! Billiards were promptly considered to be a form of gambling by the city fathers of Stockton it seems. Does anyone know if there has been a volume 2 put out by this Heritage League, and if is it available anywhere for purchase? -- Nancy M.
