In Galena, much of the infrastructure follows old mine shafts. Most of the watermain and sanitary sewers in the downtown area are in horizontal mine shafts and filled in with tailings. Every farm I have ever been in seems to have two or three old shafts on them, and where I live in Galena, there are two old shafts about 2 blocks away from my house. The Galena Library would be a good starting point for mines and miners that worked, and lived in the area. Eagle Picher had a large mine in the Galena area and they may know of where you can find out further information on mines in the area. -----Original Message----- From: Marjorie Smith [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Friday, January 12, 2001 11:15 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [ILJODAVI] Records of Lead Mine Workers? I don't know of any all encompassing records. Prior to the big mining companies probably every man mined a little hoping to get rich. Farmers mined in the winter when they didn't have field work. Prior to 1830 there is the Smith-McKnight papers at the Galena Public Library. Included in that, is a book that every miner had to signed saying they would abide by the regulations of the Federal Government. There are mines under my town of Ellizabeth, under Galena, reportedly 300 mine shafts under the Ciity of Platteville, WI.
