I don't know of any all encompassing records. Prior to the big mining companies probably every man mined a little hoping to get rich. Farmers mined in the winter when they didn't have field work. Prior to 1830 there is the Smith-McKnight papers at the Galena Public Library. Included in that, is a book that every miner had to signed saying they would abide by the regulations of the Federal Government. There are mines under my town of Ellizabeth, under Galena, reportedly 300 mine shafts under the Ciity of Platteville, WI.
