My Irish ancestors, the family of John and Mary LARKIN, came to Galena in the mid 1850s after John was a bootmaker in Milford, Mass. I believe he was a famine immigrant. He was a shoe maker in Galena and also a recruit in the 90th IL during the civil war. I do not think he came with anyone but his wife and 2 children, but there were other Larkins in the county. In the late 1870s the family moved to St. Paul, MN, and will still shoemakers there. Jeanne > I've been reading "The History of Jo Davies Co.", and the book seems to say that many of the early settlers in the Vinegar Hill area came from Ireland. Have their been any books written on the subject of Irish immigration to Galena Illinois? Did early immigrants come to the vecinity in large groups, or did inviduals make the journeys themselves? >

Specifically, is it a non-denominational cemetary? Also, where might I find burial records for the cemetary in question? Has anyone ever looked at a burial record? I've read that some of these records contain religious information on the deceased. Thank you, Stephen

If your surname Moody hails from Vermont, I found something that may be of interest to you. Incidentally, the 1855 Il. state census only indicates head of household. All others in the h/h are indicated by gender and age group. Dick

My step dad is a retired policeman here in Chicago and he always talked about the police dept. and the fire dept. as well as their history. So the hat in general has the word chief and number 1 on it together or just the number 1. Hope this helps a little, Jennifer Des Plaines, IL

Agnes married Frank Kepner, had three children (Ivan, Clarie and Helen). Agnes and Frank settled in Rockford, IL. Agnes died in 1966. Please reply with your e mail address, I would love to correspond with you. I recently spent 4 days in Stockton, IL researching the Crowleys and Carrolls. Best regards, Denise

Records prior to that time are relatively scarce and you probably won't find much. Some of my relative were significant land owners in the 1840s and I can find nothing on them. The good part is that they have indexed computer printouts for most of their records. If you don't see what you are looking for check with the clerk to be certain. Then fill out a request/billing form, indicating what records you are looking for, the clerks find it and makes a copy for you. The bad part is that it isn't cheap...oh, and be sure to bring plenty of cash or a checkbook. The last time I was there, about 2 years ago, they still didn't take any type of plastic...good luck. Chris

His body was removed on Dec 10, 1940 and taken to Chicago for reburial.” It seems rather strange to remove a body after so long (22 years) and rebury it again. I’m wondering if anyone may have any suggestions on where and how I can get some details on this? When he was actually buried in Evergreen Cemetery and where/when he was reburied in Chicago? Possibly, is there someone at Evergreen Cemetery that I could contact? Thank you. Bob

I am looking to open a genealogy library in California after I receive my masters in Library Science. (probably at least 4 years from now). Also, if anyone wants to send their family pedigrees or history to me that would be great too! Feel free to email me with any questions. Thank you! Amy
Stephen, I believe you should try the Jo Daviess courthouse for naturalization records. If not there, they probably have been microfilmed and are at the Illinois Regional Archives Depository (IRAD) in DeKalb, IL. It is located at Northern Illinois University. You can view their website and get more information. Just put "IRAD" in Google and you should find it easily. Mary Kay
