    3. This is taken out of the book MEET GENERAL GRANT by W.E. Woodward, first copyright 1928, General Grants father, Jesse, set up Ulysses' two younger brothers in a leather business at Galena, Ill. Their names were Orvil and Simpson. Uslysses was in the store as an assistant. The book goes on to say that Grant was courteous and popular with all who met him on business but never sought acquaintances. A resident of Galena who knew Grant said that "he had not more than three intimates in the whole town." There is a chapter called GRANT LEAVES GALENA FOR THE WAR, so that does give the idea he had to be there in that time frame. I found where they were in Detroit in 1850 when the first child was born. Also, a week or two after the fall of Sumter we find Grant drilling the Galena volunteers--- a crowd of husky youths who called themselves the Jo Daviess Guards. I will have to keep looking for information when he lived in Galena, as the book is just from his memoirs and mostly about his life in the military. Ena "Connie R. Loftus" wrote: > My question: with the following information in mind: > can anyone put General U.S. Grant in Galena, > Illiniois between July or Aug 1850 and Dec 1855.??? > > In 1850 my Great Grandfather Martin Bottolfsen > immigrated and went to Galena, Illiniois. > the Following is a passage from a letter Martin's > son Magnus wrote in 1932, long after his father > Martin had died in 1893. > > Quote" >father went to Galena, Ill. where he clerked > for several years, working parttime at his > trade which was Tailoring, while in Galena father > became well acquainted with >General Grant who > afterwards became President of U.S. Grants store was > next door to fathers business and they spent many > evenings smoking and visiting outside on upturned > soap boxes, small town fashion."< > Where in Galena would General Grants store have > been? 2. Connie R. Loftus
    3. My question: with the following information in mind: can anyone put General U.S. Grant in Galena, Illiniois between July or Aug 1850 and Dec 1855.??? In 1850 my Great Grandfather Martin Bottolfsen immigrated and went to Galena, Illiniois. the Following is a passage from a letter Martin's son Magnus wrote in 1932, long after his father Martin had died in 1893. Quote" >father went to Galena, Ill. where he clerked for several years, working parttime at his trade which was Tailoring, while in Galena father became well acquainted with >General Grant who afterwards became President of U.S. Grants store was next door to fathers business and they spent many evenings smoking and visiting outside on upturned soap boxes, small town fashion."< Where in Galena would General Grants store have been? I have been thru Galena numerous times and have never really had the time to stop and do research on this. I would like to prove this story true, but I can't seem to find that General Grant was in Galena during this time frame. I would also like to find Mari Svendsdatter Loeng in Galena records during the time frame July 1852 and Dec 1855. She and the Martin Bottolfsen mentioned above had met and went to Allamakee County, Iowa by abt Dec 1855. they were married the following May 6 1856 at Paint Creek (now Waterville), Allamakee County Iowa. Mari Svendsdatter Loeng was a nurse, midwife. any help would be so much appreciated. I have worked on this one for years.. thanks Connie Bottolfsen Loftus

    1. [ILJODAVI] Steamer boat & canal from New York to Wisconsin
    2. Connie R. Loftus
    3. I received info that this is the best site going to obtain info like I need, I hope that info is correct. The question is about my familys travels from New York to Wisconsin and would their be any record of these journeys. Bottolf Bottolfsen, his wife Martha Andersdatter, his sons Nils, and Martin and a daughter Karen. arrived in New York July 16, 1850 from Norway on the ship Christiane. According to my Grandfather: : they then came to Millwaukee Wisconsin by steamboat and canal and by Post Horses to Beloit Wisconsin. From there Martin went to Galena, Ill and Nils and 4 or 5 other Norwegians walked to Alamakee County Iowa and took up homesteads. I do not know how long Bottolf, Martha and Karen remained in Beloit, Wisc. Bottolf and Martha were already quite old in 1850. Can anyone enlighten me on this voyage from New York to Millwaukee and then on to Beloit? another family of mine : Mari Svendsdatter Loeng and her brother Hovel (Hover) Svendsen Loeng arrived in NY on July 18, 1851 from Norway, don't know what ship yet and traveled by boat and canal to Milwaukee and then by ox team to Rock Prairie Wisconsin. They arrived in Rock Prairie on Aug 18, 1851. I believe both Mari and Hover stayed in Wisconsin for a year or so, in fact Hover enlisted with the 8th Wisconsin Regiment in the Civil war. Mari was a nurse midwife and I believe that she stayed in Wisconsin for a time and worked there. She eventually went to Galena, Illinois, Leaving Galena in 1856 with Martin Bottolfsen and Going to Allamakee County, Iowa and getting married on May 6th 1856. I would like to find information about Mari and Hover in Wisconsin. I posted this to theWisconsin list. and also if anyone can enlighten me about the voyage from New York to Wisconsin for these folks also. If I havent supplied enough info, please let me know. Thank you very much. I realize You are not the Wisconsin list, but like I said I was told this was the list to ask about the trip from New York to Wisconsin. Connie Bottolfsen Loftus

    2. Cheryl Hemingway
    3. Today Marjorie Smith sent a document to me that contains vital record extracts from Galena Newspapers from 1828-1850. In looking through the material that she sent, I'm seeing that the records are showing the parents of a lot of the couples whos marriages are listed in the newspapers - especially the bride's parents. If you have looked for the parents of your ancestor in the marriage records and haven't found them this new source may be of interest. It is indexed at the website as Vital Records from Galena Newspapers, 1828-1850 -Cheryl Hemingway [email protected] http://members.tripod.com/~Chemingway/HomeonWeb.html Jo Daviess Co., IL USGenWeb: http://users.rootsweb.com/~iljodavi/index.htm Jo Daviess Co., IL Marriage Index: http://members.tripod.com/~Chemingway/Mrg.html

    1. [ILJODAVI] Allison YOUNG/Sarah REED: PA, IL, IA-1850-1900
    2. EBerkson
    3. I am looking for other individuals researching this line to exchange and share information with. I especially would like to know more about the children of Allison and Sarah. Allison YOUNG, b. 1828 in Mercer Co., PA, was the son of John Thomas YOUNG and Nancy Jane ALLISON. About 1851 Allison married Sarah REED, b. 1830, in Limetown, Washington Co., PA. Sarah was the eldest daughter of Paul REED and Nancy FEREE. I believe, but have not been able to confirm that Allison and Sarah's first child, John Paul, was born and died as an infant in Limetown, Washington Co., PA. Sometime, shortly thereafter, Allison and Sarah moved to Jo Daviess Co., IL. Allison and Sarah had seven children in all. John Paul, died as an infant; Nancy Jane, b. 1855; Julia Ellen, born about 1857; Charles (Frank), b., about 1860; Samuel Reed, b. 1865; Edward Kittoe, b. 1868; and William, b. 1870. Other than the oldest, John Paul, all were born in Jo Daviess County, IL. Sarah died in 1870 in Preston, IA shortly after the birth of her last child. Allison went on to marry Emma Wheldon and have three more children: Emma, Allison, and Ray. I have lots of blanks in this family picture and would especially like to learn more about what happened to Allison and Sarah's children after Sarah's death as well as learn more about Allison's children by Emma. Any help and information would be greatly appreciated, Janet Young Berkson
